Yep, kids, you heard it.....here's the story: Had a recording session for the new Holdouts record at 10am Sunday. We started, things were going good. Around 1:30 PM or so, according to the others who were there, I suffered a seizure. I turned pale and collapsed, falling forward onto a chair and onto our bass player's pedal rig. I then started convulsing pretty violently. Fortunately, our engineer is a registered nurse, and he was able to turn me over on my side and make sure I didn't swallow my tongue. The ambulance came about 15 minutes later and took me to Clear Lake Regional Medical Center, and that is where I was until 5:30 PM earlier this evening (Tuesday). They did a CAT scan, an EEG and an MRI on my head, and a bunch of blood tests over the two days I was there. They didn't find anything out of the ordinary, except for my lifestyle, which now has to change. Since I was in my early 20s, I have constantly skipped meals and operated on 4-5 hours of sleep. That must change now, because it hits you alot harder when you are (almost) 45. No injuries, except the right side of my face looks like I went 12 with Mike Tyson (black eye, big contusion on the cheek, lots of little cuts and raw patches) I am not happy I suffered a seizure, but I'm damn glad it happened where it did instead of happening while I was driving my car on the freeway, where the result I'm sure would have been fatal to me and others in other cars on the freeway. Nevertheless, it is definitely a midlife wakeup call to start taking better care of myself, and that is what I plan to do. I wouldn't wish a seizure on my worst of enemies, and I hope that my incident will open the eyes of people my age that we all have to do a better job of taking care of ourselves with the little things as well as the big things. I'll tell ya one thing....after 2 1/2 days as a hospital patient, walking into my house never ever felt so damn good.
Glad you have fully recovered without any major injuries. I hope it was just a one time thing. Seizure is an unpredictable b!atch. I saw people suffering from seizure on the road (walking), and in the middle of lecturing a class. Gotta take care of yourself, man.
The last thing I remember was getting ready to do a take on track #4. The next thing I remember is waking up in the back of the ambulance as it was pulling in to the emergency room loading zone at the hospital. I was out for approximately 25 minutes. The things I have to change in my life include operating on 4 hours of sleep on weeknights and skipping meals, mainly breakfast and lunch.
Glad you're good to go man ~ i'd try to take this as a postive and make those lifestyle changes. You're so right about this happening in the right place surrounded by friends that could help you immediately. You never want something like that in the happening in the middle of nowhere or on the road.
i think it's my duty as your friend to make sure we eat a hearty lunch at kenny & ziggy's again very soon!
Wow. Get well and take care of yourself. Now, cue the lyrics to a cheezy Betty Boop song: http://www.heptune.com/lyrics/buttonup.html Button Up Your Overcoat (DeSylva, Brown, Henderson) Transcribed from vocals by Helen Kane, recorded 1/30/1929, from the musical "Follow Through," From Helen Kane, the Original 'Boop-Boop a-Doop' Girl: Great Original Performances 1928 - 1930; Robert Parker's Classic Years in Digital Stereo, Louisiana Red Hot Records, RPCD-323, Listen, big boy, Now that you got me made, Goodness, but I'm afraid, Somethin's gonna happen to you! Glad to have you back RMT. Best of luck on your life-style changes. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes these drastic events to make us change. We'll know you've changed once you start posting how great your tofu steak was the night before.
Wow, I always knew that I impacted people with my skillful debating skills in the D&D, but this is a little much! Glad to have you back, "other Tex".
Unfortunately, it sometimes takes something drastic to make us change, especially those of us as died in the wool as me. No on the tofu steaks, but you'll know I've changed when I start posting how great my 8 hours of sleep were the night before!
