from Tennessee. yeah...the guy starts driving around town today in Nashville and ends up at Vanderbilt. He and his girlfriend spot two big black tour buses. So they park...and on the bus is a "True Reflections" sticker (that's the name of the album Boyd Tinsley released recently). They go up to some of the people standing around who were working...and now they're getting ready to meet Boyd Tinsley and Leroi Moore. If you're a DMB freak like RM95 and I are, you'll appreciate this. If not...go about your business. but i'm freaking jealous. i hate rm95 now.
Can I take advantage of this thread to ask an honest question? What is your (whoever likes DMB, is reading, and wants to respond) favorite thing about the music or the band? I'm not trying to be a snot. I really want to know more, and I haven't heard much of the music. What little I've heard was fine but didn't catch my interest at first.
come on. it's a neat story. the guy is in nashville...he's a big fan...and the day of the show he gets to meet a couple of guys from the band. i think that's pretty self-explanatory. B-Bob -- i just love their music...they've blended in a lot of different influences...and i love it. ima - he told me he really wanted to meet carter, but he's not there. they travel in separate buses. and dave is in atlanta with his family...rm95 was like, "but still...i still have the opportunity to meet boyd." i told him since i'm getting ready for trial on monday i'd gladly trade places with him.
What is this DMB you speak of....? Wait a better question is what is the DMG that Jack Johnson mentions in his Bubbletoes song.... he said he ate lunch there...
I like that.... off myself. I am going to start to use that. Very Shakespearian. "If you do not disrobe I will off myself!" or "If the Bucs win the title again this year I will off myself!" Very fun.
MM, Okay, that's a start. You like that they combine different musical traditions. Are the songs catchy? Do you like the lyrics? Do the songs make you close your eyes and do the "white man's overbite" thing? Do they make you do hair-tossing, heavy metal style? I'll leave you be now. I am curious though... not so much why you personally love them, but because a lot of people I know say they are the real deal.
Sorry Max but how could you actually think that I didn't know what that meant? Damn you must have really showed restraint not including a "you idiot" with your translation there
yes..Dave's lyrics do speak to me. there is a continual theme in much of his music that plays towards appreciating what you have...living with vitality today...not letting your problems overwhelm you...perspective of your problems juxtaposed to a giant universe, etc. that really speaks to me. i find their music to be optimistic, for the most part...and that was a welcome change for me in the middle of the grunge rock phase while i was in college. i had a much harder time relating to songs about hitting rock bottom, being sad and wanting to stay there. there are jazz influences..funk influences...folk/rock. it's just a nice blend, i think. you can pop in a cd and hear songs that are drastically different from track to track. pick up Before these Crowded Streets for illustration on that one. i can't believe "Crush" and "The Last Stop" were even done by the same artist..more or less on the same album. music is personal taste...so i can't guarantee you'll like it. but music also becomes part of your life...the songs remind me of time with my wife...with my son...with certain friends. so they have a certain familiarity momentum to them now. dmb is a great live act. as Jeff once said here, they're one of the few bands that sounds as good live as they do on studio recordings. their shows are very high energy...and i have the same feeling that RM95 does..it's become an annual event for me and my wife, and it feels a little like Christmas morning each year on that day. they have an almost cultish type following that has drawn Grateful Dead comparisons.
He just called back...he met Carter and had his picture taken with him. Also met Leroi and had his picture taken with him. He missed Boyd while talking to Carter. He said they were very nice... I told him I posted this here and he said he'd check in later to tell more about it.
Wow, MM, That's exactly the kind of description I was hoping to get. Very honest and informative. Thanks!
madmax.. im taking a wild guess and thinking he is referring to the hotel right near by that bush was at last week and all the famous people go to.. ill go check it out. thats just a random guess..
