Offensively, unquestionably. Defensively, I doubt it. Haven't seen enough to tell . . .

He doesn't have the defensive instincts of Hawkins but he is far superior on offense.

Alex Scales is what I like to call The Greatest Player of All Time. He's lightening quick and can jump. Plus he plays smart and, perhaps most important of all, he was a member of one of the greatest San Jacinto Runnin Raven teams ever. I can't tell you some of the amazing dunks that dude pulled off right in front of my eyes. So, in short, if the Rockets don't keep this guy I will go on a hunger strike.

According to one article related to Yao, Scales played CBA(China) for one season. Can anybody dig some info about this?

According to this Chinese article, he played in CBA with the "South Steel" team in 2001-02 season. I couldn't find his stat though.

Alex dominated the CBA when he played there. he had a funny moment when he played against Yao's team. He went up to do the jump ball at the tipoff against Yao. As Yao looked down at him and laughed, all spectators laughed out loud. he eventually gave up the jumpball to his team's 7'2 center.

The following link says that Alex was a former player of Jiangsu Dragons(sponsored by South Steel) in CBA, but one needs to register to view his profile:(

    http://www.asia-basket.com/CHNteam.asp?team=1951&option=Jiangsu Nangang Dragons Nanjing (CHN-CBA)&Cntr=CHN&logo=

Here is a recap of the 2002 CBA all star game found on the same website:

    Bateer Won CBA All-Star Game MVP - Feb.19, 2002
(Taipei, Taiwan - February 18) Although his Ebo Watch All-Stars lost 120-122 to Jordan All-Stars in the 2002 CBA All-Star Game, Beijing Shogang center Menk Bateer was named MVP of the game while rumors of him joining NBA's Denver Nuggets flying around. SINA guard Jason Woodard scored game-high 23 points for the winner.
Alex Scales, who came from Jiangsu Dragons, made two free-throws with 18 seconds remaining to ice the game. Scales had 20 points and 5 assists, while Yao Ming had 18 points, 17 rebounds and 3 blocks. Jilin F Sun Jun and Bayi F Liu Yu-dong had 18 and 15 points, respectively.

So, how much weight do you want to lose?:D

In most years Scales would have had a better than decent chance of making the team. However, this year there are too many guaranteed contracts at his position. Pity.
