I know this topic has been discussed before, but I figured it would get lost in the other post. Here is my thought. A 32 playoff system. We can still use the BCS to determine the top 25 teams. If you are in the BCS rankings at the end of the regular season, then the top 25 teams will have an automatic bid to the 32 team playoffs. After that you have 7 at-large berths. This means upsets. We can still have the Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, and Orange bowls. For example the last 4 teams automatically get to play in a bowl game. one semifinal game can be the rose, the other semifinal game can be fiesta bowl. the ones who go to the championship play in the orange bowl, and there can be a 3rd place bowl game which would be the sugar bowl. I'm open to criticism.
Only allow teams to play 10 regular season games...the way it used to be. Make every team have a conference championship. Don't start the rankings until October. Keep the current bowl formula, but add an extra national championship playoff game. That's a maximum of 13 games, which is what it should be. Teams already play a maximum of 14 games right now, and adding a multi-round playoff to that is just not going to happen. These aren't grown men.
This is the best one IMHO: SOLUTION #2: An objection to the playoff plan by some bowl committees was that it did not utilize at least 19 existing bowl games. This solution was developed to overcome that objection, which creates a national elimination tournament where most existing bowl games would be utilized as playoff sites for the Top 20 teams in the country. The advantages would remain the same as solution #1 except the first round would be played one week after the end of the regular season, approximately on December 7, thus giving the top 12 teams a two week break before the post season playoffs. The B.C.S. Poll would serve as the official ranking system. WILDCARD GAME: Played one week after the regular season. (Approximately the first week in December) FIRST ROUND: Played two weeks after the regular season. (Approximately the second week in December) QUARTERFINALS: Played one week after the first round. SEMIFINALS: Played on New Year's Weekend. THE FINAL: National Championship played the weekend before the Super Bowl. ---> The inclusion of most Existing Bowl Games Utilized as Playoff Sites.
