And it's just now starting to sink in. Basically, there is a Radiologic Technology program at the local hospital I'm trying to get into, and I go before a big panel of people tomorrow for an interview. It's going to determine if I get in or not, which will determine what I do for the rest of my life, basically.

If I get in, I go to the hospital for "school" for two years, starting in August, and learn to be an X-ray tech. That is something I really want to do, and it has great opportunities for advancement into fields like nuclear medicine, sonography, CT scanning, and MRIs.

If I don't get in, I guess I gotta stay in college, and I'll get my degree in something I'm less interested in, like Physical Therapy.

The school only has twelve students, as they only admit six a year. Everyone that graduates gets offered a job at the hospital afterwards, too. It's a great program. I really hope I get in.

    Meh, this sucks...I can't sleep.

Plus, I'm ditching a class for the interview. :)

Good luck man! I have the biggest test of my life this week, the admission test for dental school. It sucks, I know how you are feeling. Just relax and be yourself tomorrow, you will be fine.

Chill out ! You should act like you don't care even though you do care A LOT, really, but everything happens for a reason so... relax and be yourself.

I got an important interview tommorow as well! Good Luck!

    Good luck!

The keys are to remain calm, answer their questions concisely and project confidence.

Take a drink to loosen up or better yet do what you do before a big date. :)

    That will lessen the tension.

    Good Luck, dude.

It'll be cool if we got some good news on this board- especially if it's life changing.

Good luck, EWS! You are pursuing my wife's profession.

She went to rad school in Roanoke and did Special Procedures at UVa in Charlottesville, VA.

She worked in hospital for a while, then went to work on the corporate side in sales and training for the equipment involved. Now she's back in the hospital-- probably for good.

Great field. There's always job openings. I'm been trying to nudge my daughter in that direction. She's a sophomore in college with thoughts of being a PA or a Genetic Counselor. In the end, I don't think she'll embrace the complex sciences and I think radiology would be a great field.

Mrs. Giddyup works Friday (8-4) and Saturday and Sunday (Noon to Midnight). She's free Monday through Thursday...

    Hey EddieWasSnubbed
Do you live in Houston? IF yes go apply at San Jacinto Colleges Radiology school. It is by FAR the best in Houston. My wife and I both are Rad techs and she is now a Radiology Director and I went back to school and got my Network Admin degree and I now install EMR's.
If you go to a hospital based school you will not earn your Assoiciates degree.

I do not live in Houston. I live way up in Western New York. If I get in, upon graduation, I'll get 30 credit hours at our community college, which would give me my associate's.

Thanks for all the support guys. I just got home from the interview. I think it went very well. I think they only thing that may have been bad, is I may have come across as cocky. I have no idea if I did or not, though. I think I was about as good as I could have been. I'll find out at the end of the month if I got in or not. Thanks guys. :)

Questions for those that are/have relatives in the field:

Did you just go for the certification? I mean, you probably got Associate's going through a college (which I will get), but did you go further with it? If so, how far?

P.S. Giddyup, those are awesome hours! Is she salary based, or hourly?

Also, for anyone with any experience in the interview process....

I'm almost 100% sure I was the first person to be interviewed. Also, whenever I called to confirm the interview, they seemed very happy that I had called. Am I reading too much into this, or are these good signs?

Mrs. Giddyup got her BA later by going part-time right after we got married and BEFORE children. I just asked Mrs. G and she had 60 hours credited towards her BA-- but then she went to Rad School and Special Procedures (which involves using injectibles to study compromised blood flow for head injuries, wounds, vascular problems from diabetes, strokes etc.) School.

Yeah, she is a salaried employee but it is based on an hourly wage which is "negotiable." She works 32 hours and gets paid for a 40-hour week... because she is willing to work weekends. She's never on call. At her hospital they have a 7AM to 7PM person and a 7PM to 7AM person and Mrs. Giddyup bridges the two slots from 12 Noon to Midnight.

This kind of schedule works for us now with a 4YO and a 6YO at home but I imagine that she will gravitate toward a regular weekly schedule when the girls get a little older because, right now, she is missing our weekend family life.

If you are flexible upon graduation (I know you have a girlfriend!), you might want to learn about the PRN (?) opportunities. These are traveling Rad Techs. You move around and do long-term fill in; it might be a month or three or six months at some facility somewhere. You get a higher pay rate and you get to see a bit of the country-- if you want to do that kind of thing.

It is a great field; there seem to always be job openings and lots of opportunity to move around.

My daughter is a college sophomore and is kind of "unimpressed" with college. I suggested that she take a year off and go to rad tech school and get a job as a rad tech and go to college part-time while she earns money. She's on a pretty good scholarship package, though, so she is leery of backing away...
