My goal in life now is to prevent anyone I come in contact with from owning a VW.

Let me tell you my story. In 1999, my wife decides to buy a new car. She decides that she likes the VW jetta GLX (top of the line model). We spend almost 25K on this car. Since then we have had nothing but problems with it. Here are the list of problems.

Within the first 5K miles, the sunroof and the airbag goes out. I should have sold it then.

    Driver side window goes out.

    Battery goes out.

    Greases oozes from the doors

    fuel pump goes out.

    passenger side window goes out.

    oxygen sensor goes out

    mass air flow sensor goes

    coolant pump starts to leak.

    instrument cluster goes out.

Driver side window goes out again.

    Thermostat goes out.

    Battery goes out again.

Now the engine goes out at 55K miles.

Along with this problem, the car is a pain even when it isn't broken. You have to Super unleaded gas, it takes a special oil filter that cost over $10 which only VW sells. Only one oil change place in town does oil changes on them. And finally, the cup holders just suck.

This is the worse car I've ever seen.

Some other facts that I learned after I bought the car. Volkswagen has terrible customer service, their warranties devide in half if you sell the car, and they are consistently rated in the bottom five among auto makers in reliability by JD powers.

They just suck. I will root for Karl Malone before I purchase a VW again. I hate them.

You are not the first person I know to complain about VW.

The cars my friends complain about the most are VW and Jaguar, and I will never buy either of them.

That sucks. Their new Touareg seems pretty sharp.

There is one in my apartment. I looked and it is almost 50K all decked out. Why anyone would buy a VW for 50K is beyond me. You can buy an Escalade or Land Cruiser for that much.

Why didn't you have it taken care of under the Texas Lemon Law? You could be in a new car now.

    That's not good!

It's weird though because they have some of the safest cars around.

The lemon law contrary to popular belief is there to protect the auto maker. The same problem has to happen multiple times within the warranty period, for you to have a claim. Since the warranty was only 24K miles, the lemon law doesn't really apply here.

According to whom? I'm not doubting you, I just haven't heard anything exceptional about their safety. Also, safety has no relationaship to reliability.

Well, when the cars don't run, they can't get into accidents, :)

Sorry to hear that you won't be getting your safety deposit back. ;)

These aren't for that model or year in particular but VW's get good crash test ratings.

Yes, I know it has nothing to do with reliability, but you tend to assume that a good car is a good car. Or that German cars are good cars! ;)

That sucks, dude. Car problems are the worst -- especially in new ones.

I've owned nothing but VW, and never had any serious problems. Seem to be good, solid cars.

what exactly is an oxgen sensor, and what does it do. I think I might need work on an oxygen sensor.

Friend of a friend had reoccuring problems with the front window and ignition of his Passat. Anyway after several attempts to fix the problems he finally gave up and got rid of it. Apparently he is now suing either VW or the dealer, don't quite remember which one.
I was thinking of getting a Jetta but his story really put me off.

I don't know exactly, but mine went out a dew months ago. Not much to get it replaced. I don't know exactly what it does. It does moniter the amount of oxygen in your exhaust, I think. It has to do with emissions and pollution I think.

It regulates the amount of oxygen that gets into your engine. If it goes out you will get poorer gas mileage and in the long run may damage your engine. Your check engine light comes on if it goes out. It should cost about a few hundred bucks to fix unless its german, then it will cost a whole lot more.

Everything I've heard in the past about Jetta's are that they're not very reliable vehicles.

    rockbox,

You asked who would want to pay 50K for a VW? Wait'll they have their Phaeton out. It's their 70k luxury car. :D

    LOL! Good one...

Kia's are pretty safe vehicles, too... or so they advertise anyway.
