A couple of early observations: Lopez is setting up well outside the catcher's box. I thought they were supposed to not allow that? KNWS Channel 51 sucks. I hate having to watch TBS to see the game. The umpires are not giving Glavine that outside strike call, to which the announcers remarked "He's gonna have to get some part of the ball over some part of the plate to get a strike call." Huh? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that the definition of a strike? I hate the Braves!
behad: did the announcers seem to be regretting this, or was it just an observation? I can't believe my luck... the Astros, my favorite team in the whole wide world, are on national TV, and I'm stuck at work until 9pm
The game is in atlanta so what are they talking about? Enron of course The one guy said "They should have named it Chapter 11 book store field" or something along those lines.
I don't mind the Braves announcers cause the picture is so much better on TBS. If they keep pissing you off, I'd turn the SAP on. edit - SAP doesnt seem to be working.
I guess the only thing that I am annoyed with is TBS is still using the old Astros logo (gold star). I mean its been what 3 years and the Superstation can't upgrade its graphics.
On a side note, what the heck is wrong with Ausmus. Can he possibly be any worse at preventing and throwing out base stealers. Its pathetic that Surhoff got that steal. Someone remind me how old Surhoff is again.
right now he's pretty bad but considering he did win the gold glove last year, i'm assuming it's lingering effects from the shoulder injury.
I'd just like to say that hit batsmen (was it Biggio?) was a huge load of crap. The pitch wasn't even on the inside part of the plate, it was right down the middle.
Especially considering how awful Redding has looked in his MLB starts so far...thank god Mlicki has pitched well.
I'm trying to figure Mlicki out. It doesn't seem like he's actually developed an above average pitch. He's not throwing harder. But for some reason, he's not sucking anymore. He had a couple of decent years early in his career... don't know what's the issue, there. He does keep the ball on the ground, which is a blessing for a non-strike out pitcher. Mlicki's got me puzzled... only idea I have is that it's the expanded strike zone. But, then, that was in effect last year, too....
The only thing I have noticed with Mlicki is that he keeps the ball low...always. He rarely drifts up in the strike zone where all the power hitters like to jack things. Plus, he changes speeds well. While none of his pitches are very fast, he can get the fast ball up there at about 90 mph, his changeup is around 80 mph, and the curve ball (which at times is very good) is around 77mph or so. The only time the Braves started hitting Super Dave tonight was when they all started going down and getting that low fastball he had been giving them all night...and even then they weren't scorching it.
jesus, rm95, if you noticed, I was attempting to explain why he's been successful in terms of on field play. You guys think stats are more important to me than they are. I think they're the best tool to evaluate how a player has performed. They don't tell you whether a player's succeeding with a curve ball, fastball, slider, control, or blind luck. I'm trying to figure out how Dave Mlicki is pitching like a #2 starter these days, despite having seemingly neither developed new pitches or improved other ones. If you have a clue, please do let me know . RR: good observation, looking back on it... that's true... but it has to be more than that, since if keeping the ball down great pitchers made... there'd be a lot of great pitchers out there.
