I thought about going into the long story about what I have been doing since 9:30 last night but I figured that would be too much. Basically - my 120 gig iPod classic froze last night. I had been getting messages from iTunes telling me that "it could not recognize the iPod as it was corrupted" but in reading some messages from applesupport forums, it seemed that all you had to do was unplug the USB cord and plug back in again. So, I figured I would do the good ole apple restart and then restore if I had to.

So I pushed on the menu and select button at the same time and held down for 10 seconds. I had to load iTunes on my home computer (long story - don't ask on why it has not been on there before) and I kept getting these damn error messages of 1437 or 1439 and that was that. When I looked at the possible reason for those error messages - all I got was stuff like reinstalling and updating the drivers, changing script on some commands, and other various stuff. I tried doing all those things but still nothing worked. Stupid iTunes would not try to restore the iPod. I then went to my work computer that has the main iTunes library up and ran into the same issues. I even "flushed" the DNS thingie and still nothing. Finally uninstalled iTunes and re-installed - still did not work. :(

Apparently, my warranty has expired - the good news is that I still have my old iPod that is a 60 gig as my wife has been using it. She, knowing how much I love the iPod has given it back to me. I did have like 87 gig on my 120 so I am in the process of scaling back tremendously and putting only the stuff I want to hear on the 60 gig - in other words, I am going from 14,000 plus songs to barely over 2,000....sucks the big one, I know. :( But, hey it is better than nothing, right?

In the meantime, I have my 120 gig iPod in disk mode and charging to a power source but I don't think that is going to help anything - I am pretty sure that I am f***ed on this. I don't really want to shell out $250 bucks for a 160 gig iPod classic and especially if the damn thing is only going to last little over a year.

So, my question to the BBS - is there anything at all out there that is as good or better than the apple iPod?? I know there are mp3 players but they seem pretty primitive to the iPod. Can it be that the iPod has no competition and I am stuck with having to buy a new one? Help please. :(

I've never had a problem with my iPod. My laptop on the other hand has given me nothing but trouble. It seems like something goes wrong with this apple piece of crap every other week. I havn't even had it for 2 years and I am thinking about tossing it.

Good luck. I've been searching for some player to replace my iPod (80GB classic) and have had no luck finding something that just plays music and comes with a large drive. If you find something, please let me know.

FYI, I don't use iTunes at all. I use Media Monky to sync my songs and playlists to my iPod and it works well. I keep all my music in FLAC format and Media Monkey automatically transcribes the songs from FLAC to MP3 before syncing them.

I try to not even connect my iPod to iTunes as I don't want any Apple updates to "break" it!

Zune HD is a good alternative if you use windows.

I love the Archos products. Big touch screen, drag and drop management, expandable features, and huge HD space all for a low price. It has its cons though (for example the older models are pretty big). Go to cnet.com and look at media player reviews.

There's nothing better than an Apple iPod when it comes to music. The closest thing that comes to it is a Zune.

when it comes to music..zune is 100% better than ipod. especially if you combine it with the zune pass.

but apps seperate the devices. no body can touch the popularity of the app store.

The majority of consumers agree that the iPod is a better choice for an MP3 player... I don't think it's even close.

I have an iPhone and a Zune HD. The Zune (with my Zune pass) is so much nicer as a music device. I'd be willing to say that if given the opportunity to try a Zune for a week for free, most people that currently have iPods would prefer the Zune. Especially if you don't care about the apps, etc.

    Apple sucks.

I like the old school 60GB Video iPod, as long as I don't have to mess with iTunes and can find a decent free program that I can use to manage it.

This is Apple's way of making you pay for the music you download.

God, give it up already with the Apple fanboy ranting. Just because it selling alot does not make it a better MP3 player.

Go with the HD Zune. Apple ipod suck and the only good thing got going for it is the iTunes store.

Why do you constantly label me as an apple fanboy? I only own TWO apple products, one of which was given to me as a gift. I don't follow Apple other than the fact that I look for smart phones each year.

I never mentioned anything about it being better because it sold more. I've seen my share of consumer ratings, polls, and opinions from people who have bought the iPod (not the touch)... that's what I'm going by.

It's the way you keep defending them. It's a well know fact that that the other brands have better sound than the ipod. It a well know fact that their hardware is lacking but it's their softwares that's kicking other brands butt. But it's a mp3 player and there are cheaper players than the ipod that are better if you don't mind their look. I would rather have a better functionality product than a product that just look good with limited functionality and doesn't have to realize on the iTunes.

If you want something cheaper. Go with a Sony E-Series Walkman if you want the best sound and good battery life. Their UI and functionality isn't the greatest but Sony always deliver on great sound and good battery life that's what an MP3 is supposed to do.

If this was an attempt to be funny, I'm not laughing. All the songs on my iPod come from my hard drive - none from the Apple Store, whether I decided to buy those or not.

The Zune looks enticing but it is made by Microsoft and that right there makes me hesitant plus it is more expensive (although it probably is the superior product). I'm leaning towards a sony 16GB mp3 player - I'm just worried about the number of songs it will hold. On my old 60 gig iPod, I have like 2152 songs and that has already taken up 13.9 gig, so I don't think I'll even make 3,000 at that rate on the mp3 player, but maybe I will.
