with the trading deadline only 3 weeks or so away, I am basically giving up hope that the Rockets will trade Walt.

With the poor attendance the last 3 years, there's no way that Les is making a profit off of the Rockets. With that having been said, Les might just want Walt's contract to expire, so he unloads 5 mill this year. Obiously, if we traded Walt for 5 mill in salary in return (in contracts that don't expire after this year) Les wouldn't be saving any money.

To top it all off, Walt hasn't played in a while...

Walt hasn't played lately because he has a severely sprained ankle. He'll probably miss a few more games too. But I'm certain Rudy will put the unproductive one back in the rotation as soon as he can.

Besides, why trade Walt's 5 million contract for another expiring 5 million contract? What does this gain the Rockets?

I didn't mean trade Walt for another guy who has an expired contract...

I meant that Les might not want to trade Walt for a guy who will make 5 mill or so for the next few years.
