Not my first choice of places to live, but at this point I have few options in Austin. One good thing is that there is a strong probability that I would eventually relocate (after a year or so) to either Denver, Las Vegas, Phoenix, or Sacramento. Besides the Rockets, I need some STRONG convincing of why Houston is a great place to live for a single 26 year old male.....
Don't go. It's hotter and much more humid than Austin. Friends will live literally hours from you and still be in Houston. The only views will be from the peaks of 59/610/290/10 freeways. Say goodbye to Barton Springs, and any kind of elevation change. If you love driving lots, go for it. Nothing like going 85mph+ on 610 and passing all the sane people. I can't believe in ten years I never got a ticket on the loop. Houston actually has three loops around the city as opposed to the half loop around Austin, so it's relatively easy to navigate.
It's a beautiful city. Trees everywhere, good art districts. Classy people, nice scenery, bayous...(sp) Close to Galveston... Great, warm, tropical weather... It is the best city in Texas. The Rockets should be worth it.
Austin is a hard town to leave, but you never know how long your offer will be on the table or when the next one will come.
You are going to come to Houston to take my place after I leave Houston for Austin. Someone needs to take my spot at the games and bball pick up games. Plus the job market sucks so bad that you should take this job until things pick up and you can be picky again. B
You could live in the same city as posters like MadMax, Jeff, Batman Jones...and of course, the immortal Refman.
You guys are pretty much dead right about all of this. I guess its hard to leave a city where I have roots with friends, family nearby, a band, and the love of my life - live music. Bottom line as many have put it: Im damn near welfare, the Austin job market is piss poor, and I have no other offers on the table. I have to live inside the loop or Galleria. I will not under any circumstances live in urban sprawl. Does the Heights have 1/1 garage apts. for rent? I refuse to live in an apartment complex, and I am willing to spend up to $650/month. Also, since I havent lived in H-town in nearly 10 years, where the hell am I going to meet some ladies besides bars?
Drewdog-- I live in a condo complex just inside the West loop. It's pretty quiet and a good area. You can get a 1br condo with electricity, water, and cable TV with HBO paid for $675 or so. If you're interested, email me and I'll tell you where it is. I'll even meet you for lunch when you come down.
Definitely would be interested. That sounds like a helluva deal for $675. Does that include covered parking or garage? That is one thing I wont miss about Austin if I move - the cost of living!
You get one covered parking space. There is a lot of uncovered visitor parking too in case you have friends over.
