    Hey guys,

I just got back from Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas with my boys and our annual Super Bowl trek.

During my stay, I got the chance to sit down and talk to Charles Barkley while he played Roulette.

The funny thing is that he is wide, but is not really that tall. About 6'4" or so I would say.

I talked to him about the Rockets, and he truly thinks that Yao is the answer to the teams needs.

Then I asked him if he could call up Steve and Cuttino and teach them how to pass. He said that Steve was learning.

I then said, "well 5 years on the job, and it looks like he is a remedial learner"

He was a really cool guy, and I could not afford to stay at the same table as him for too long....he was betting like $30,000-$50,000 per hand and the table minimum was $500.

Man, that guy was losing money.

Me....well I won $8,000 on the trip....I hit 4 of a kind at a game called Let it ride.

Oh, and I also hit the over on the Super Bowl...what an exhausting and entertaining weekend.

PS. The Prince concert at 3am was awesome too...

Awesome! Sounds like you had a perfect weekend!

Did he say anything else? Was he friendly?

It's a table game, a version of poker actually but I'm not sure about the rules or how it is played.

i dont know what made me think of this....maybe it was the witty comment about teaching steve and cat how to pass but...

my friends brother was having his bachelor party in houston and he saw jermaine oneal and greg foster at a strip club. so he went up to them and he said "hey you're greg foster aren't you??" and he acted like he had no clue who jermaine oneal was. i thought it was a great story.

WOW, great read. That is sweet. I trick or treated at Barkley's house back when I used to live in New Territory, Sugar Land.

That was a LONG time ago.

I've met him before playing golf. He was a hilarious guy who could suck back some beers. I told him where I went to school and he said, "I won't hold it against you, but you're all right." Funny thing is, I am taller than him. Go figure. That sounds cool, though. I wish he could get through to Franchise and Cat, because frankly, they are killing me!

Just write a periodic scathing article, special to the Chronicle. That'll teach 'em.

I doubt it. They are some hard-headed individuals, especially if JVG can't penetrate their thick skulls.

Let it Ride is a cool game where you place 3 bets down and you get dealt 3 cards, and the dealer gets 2.

If you have a pair of 10s or higher in your 3 cards you stay and you win all 3 bets.

If you don't you pull one bet back and the dealer reveals one of their 2 cards, you then get to use the dealers card in your hand, and if you now have a pair of 10s or higher you win, if not, you pull your 2nd bet back.

The dealer than reveals their last card and you get to use it in your hand. You are required to bet the last bet.

It is a cool game because if the dealer has a pair of 10s or higher everyone at the table wins.

I had three eights and knew I was a winner, and the dealer had the other 8 so the bet paid 50 to 1 on each of my 3 bets which were $50 each..so $2500 on each one, and also a $400 bonus for hitting 4 of a kind.

I then won a bit more and retired up 8k......

It's my favorite table game. I was dealt 3 to a royal flush one time. It was exciting until the dealer's first card was revealed. No one else at the table had the other two card so they were in the deck.

You can play (even if you're losing) quite a while as long as you don't keep getting sucked in with low pairs or 3 to a flush.

I'll definitely have to hit the Let It Ride table up next time I go to Tunica.

    DaDakota,
Excellent story. I am heading out to Las Vegas with the wife this weekend. I am also staying at the Mandalay Bay. How did you like it there? We are staying in the new towers. I reserved a mini suite. How was the food? Do you recommend any places to eat?

What are some cool places to see in Las Vegas? I got tickets to see Celine on Saturday night and Cirque de Solel "O" on Sunday night. Which hotel has the best buffet?

the buffets are way overrated in Vegas, especially at some of the bigger hotels

the MGM one is huge but it costs like 60 bucks a person, sorry a hotel buffet isn't worth that much money especially when the line can get huge during peak hours

If you dig Italian, there is this excellent place on West Sahara just a couple of blocks west of the interstate called The Ventian (no relation to the hotel)
