On a stolen ring that my roommate's friend took. What are the chances that I actually get it back, and that she hasn't pawned it? :(

I had it in a drawer in my room, and my room does not lock. It was stupid of me to put it there, and not keep it with me at all times. I'm currently waiting on a call back from the police

They will most likely make a report, and you will never see it again. Sorry to be neg but its the truth.

depends on where you live i guess and how much time you have on your hands.

if you live in a big city (houston, la, SF, ny etc) you may as well just built a paper airplane out of the form

small town you may have gotten some action

as for actually getting it back its probably slim at best

Zero to none unless you can prove she took it and give the police enough probable cause to get a warrant to search for it. Even then, this would be way down on the crimes-to-be-solved priority list. Most of the time in situations like this, the only reason to file a report is for insurance purposes.

Since you already know this girl, might I suggest a different course of action.

I have to agree with the above, particularly RedRowdy re: life experience.

My dad gave me one of his rings and he died the next month. The ring was stolen about six months later. I knew getting it back was a long shot, and I was right; never saw it again.

Sorry for your loss, man. For what it's worth, I hope it wasn't too expensive and didn't hold too much sentimental value. I was crushed when I lost that ring.

When I lived in Houston, my house was broken into one day and some belongings were stolen. I opened a police report, went through the motions, and a detective as assigned to the case. About a week later, I got a tip from a friend that the people who broke into my house were actually some acquaintances that had been over for a party a few weeks prior. I gave the police and the detective this info.... They did nothing. I then went to this acquaintance's house and looked into his parked car. My xbox and my belongings were IN HIS CAR. I took pictures, and gave the pictures to the police and the detective, gave them the guy's name and his address. THEY DID NOTHING.

I'm sorry for your losses as well. I guess this is just a hard life lesson to not trust too many people

If she has pawned it (recently) you have a decent shot of getting it back actually. Pawn shops SHOULD hold on to new merchandise for a certain time before selling. It is regular for police to come in and check their merchandise for specific things.

Yeah I took things into my own hands and got some of my stuff back, but the point is that the police and this detective they assigned to the case did absolutely nothing.

    Sadly I have to agree.

In my recent experience, filing a police report is a waste of time.

If you would've murdered the guy, the police would've definitely done something. ;)

Sorry, OP, take matters into your own hands. Just don't kill this chick.

I did a report once and they do jack squat. You have to keep hounding them and they still won't do anything.

Call around to the local pawn shops. If you find it at the pawn shop, THEN the police will often get involved for you to get it back, if the shop can identify the person who brought it in.

you have to be your own detective, OP, in order to crack a case like this.

if you do get lucky and get a few leads (witnesses, pawn shop, etc...), take the info to the police and demand you want to press charges on her...
