Hi guys. With tuition on the rise (as always) and jobs hard to come by I decided after this fall semester is over i'll join a branch of the military. See new places, learn a trade and get funding for my education. Plus, I love my country so I don't mind giving some of my time to her. I just don't want to die if it can be avoided. I don't think that's terribly selfish of me to think, so! Which branch do you think i'll enjoy the most and be the safest? I have a brother in the Army and a ex fiance in the Navy so i've heard some good and bad about that. I'm leaning away from the airforce because I don't want to spend 4+ years around girly guys, but I could be talked into it. So, advice please guys? (keep in mind I'm a female) Thanks
If you want girly guys, take the guys trapped out on ships with no female company for long periods of time. The Air Force is for the more intelligent members of our society interested in serving their military. My dad was in the Air Force for 20 years, so I'm most likely a little biased, but I can tell you that it most certainly takes more brains to fly a plane than to shoot a gun. Also, the chances of you actually becoming a pilot are probably pretty slim compared to the chances that you'll wind up in a technical field. And if you do, I don't think you'll be dying, aside from some massive mechanical malfunction. Join the Air Force.
Oy. Girly guys hit a nerve I see. I'm sorry. I respect anyone in any branch. I have a friend who joined the AF (he's 20 and has no degree, silly) I've just heard that their boot camp isn't physically demanding. I had a dream I joined the navy. (way cooler than roxran's dream)
My Dad was an MP in the Air Force, but I still put Navy. I'll never do any of 'em so to each his own I guess.
Nope, don't need a degree, but they have higher standards on their aptitude tests. Air Force has some great job training that can be used when you actually leave. So does the Navy. Join the Air Force.

How about the Coast Guard? It can't be too shabby being a coastie compared to the rest, and protecting the homeland is pretty valuable work.
Since you titled the thread, "I don't want to die," you obviously have major reservations about the whole thing. Enlisting in the armed forces during wartime takes a *HUGE* commitment. If, however, you feel you should enlist because you feel you're called to, rock on. But if you're making this decision for financial reasons (even partly), I'd triple-check with your college financial office. Then I'd check again. Be sure this is a choice you even have to make. Good luck in your decision!
