Ok Dream, you win, fair market value wins again, but I really just want him here. Now! I know the love-hate debacle in my mind, but I really don't want him to go. After all Dream I personally met you in 93, I talked to you, got your autograph....All the memories, but please sign. You want FMV...Ok. same terms as DRob is FMV...So sign, please and hurry up!

I would wait and see what happens with Nazr Mohammad and Marc Jackson first!

No. Not until the price comes down. RT/CD will be here after he retires, as will the rest of the team (almost an afterthought [IMG]).

2001-2 isn't what really matters, 'cause everyone knows that barring a miraculous reappearance of the Dream in '94-'95 form, there will be no championship. At least look another year ahead when considering a contract of this magnitude.

Dream ain't the future. And he is no longer good enough to justify passing up once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to build for a future.

who besides webber is once in a lifetime and will he take us to the championship. I don't think webber has it in him to take us there, and we won't be able to sign anyone else for a long time if we get him.

Treeman: once in a lifetime? perhaps not even once in 3 years. Houston will have the cap space next year, and I'm sure there will be more young, 1-year-wonder centers available. I've come to agree with heypartner on this one.

Of course, if Raef Lafrentz becomes available for cheap... [IMG].

I've pretty much given up on getting Webber, as I assume Rox mgt has too. Come to think of it, the FA market has thinned out in the past couple of days, at least as far as people I'd personally want. There are a couple left (Marc Jackson and Raef being about it), but you're probably both right. No great missed opportunities lost...

That said, I'd prefer a 1-year deal for Hakeem. I don't want to see us hamstrung without solving the C problem once and for all (meaning getting a stud into a long-term contract). That is, after all, the last piece in the puzzle.

I wish somehow the Rockets could give Hakeem an incentive laden contract similar to the one given to Rodman while he was on the Bulls. Not sure if that's even possible, but it would likely result in a more focused Dream on the court.

Granted next year's crop of free agent centers is better than this year's offering, it's not that much better, and players available this offseason are likely more attainable than the centers some of you are dreamcasting into the starting lineup in 2002-03.

The only center I'm interested in, out of next year's crop, is Raef Lafrentz.

Nobody is "bashing" Hakeem, we just don't want to keep r****ding the growth of this organization by constantly "rewarding" him.

    r****ding Growth?

The best Rockets Roster is one that includes Hakeem next year. Without him, the playoffs are a longshot as much as I hate to say it. You can't get to the playoffs with a frontcourt of EG (rookie), Mo Taylor (soft and overrated), and Cato/Collier

Don't read too much into that. Strictly speaking, every opportunity passed by was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity (considering that all current FAs from other teams are likely to sign w/ someone else and never come here), but seeing what's left on the FA market, it's probably no big loss. I guess we'll just have to wait another year for the next once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, if you get my drift...

Yep, Hakeem is r****ding Cato's "growth". I knew there had to be a reason Cato sucked so bad...I should've known that was Hakeem's fault too.

I'm going on the assumption that the Rockets have to pass up a decent center to reward Dream for PR, and signing him for 2 years. Do you think a 39 or 40 year old center is good going to help the rebuilding process!? How many games will he miss? Will he be able to finish out the season? Is he going to complain about shots?

Give me a break, you know I'm talking about the cap space. You want to hand out big money to Hakeem because "we can't repay him for everything he has done". So you're telling me you want to keep a 38 or 39 year old center on the roster sucking up huge amounts of money to keep "repaying" him!?

And by the way before people throw out the "Cato is making big bucks and sucks" scenerio, two wrongs don't make a right. Just because a young, lazy center got big money doesn't mean the Rockets have to start shelling out multi-year, multi-million dollar deals because people want to reward him for things he did in the past. Nobody is going to forget what Dream did, but geez you can't keep "repaying" him!

    "Cato=Bum:
Would you rather we signed Hakeem for 1 year or 2 years?"

-Preferably one year, so we can be players in FA next year, although most of the good FA's next year are gonna be restricted FA's anyway.

"I'm going on the assumption that the Rockets have to pass up a decent center to reward Dream for PR, and signing him for 2 years. -I don't think Dream is being rewarded at all for PR purposes. I do agree that he needs to stay healthy if he wants big $$ for next year. The reason the Rockets want and need Hakeem back is because he played very well the end of last year and can still help out the team. You can tell by listening to Francis that he greatly respects Hakeem as do the rest of the Rockets. Having him around is definitely a good thing.

"Just because a young, lazy center got big money doesn't mean the Rockets have to start shelling out multi-year, multi-million dollar deals because people want to reward him for things he did in the past. "

-No, it's because Hakeem is a key element in the Rockets chances for making the playoffs next year. And no one is saying to sign him to a 3-4 year worth the MAX. By no means should or will the Rockets do that.

Nope, that's you misinterpreting. If I think it's impossible to repay him, what would be the point of continuing to pay him in an attempt to do that? I'm for giving him fair market, plus whatever extra we have this year. I'm not for people pretending like they know what goes on behind closed doors, and people taking rumor and using it to assault someone's character.

Yea, you would've probably said the same thing last year. Unfortunately on all your posts you never acknowledge that hakeem won't be able to play the whole season. This season he'll probably play even less..yet you say he is the answer to the playoffs? yea right. You think our team is going to be that much better, that we will win..what 50games? Our team IS growing and having someone like hakeem take up cap space for future agents DOES r****d(i hate that word) our growth as a team, not necessary the players' growth individually. quit holding on to the past man.

Do you think $10 million is FMV for Hakeem? I don't think so...at least not someone with his injury problems and health (and blood condition). IMO FMV for Hakeem is $5-7 million. And I sure hope we don't sign him for 2 years (or more). There have been times in the past couple of years where his health have raised talk of retirement due to their severity.

And all this talk about Houston not being able to repay Hakeem. I don't see that. He received a nice contract extension in 1996 and received $16 million for 58 games last season. Back in the day any million dollar contracts were considered huge, so its not like Hakeem wasn't paid. He might not have been paid the millions and millions of dollars but few players were. BTW I know for a few years he was underpaid but I think the 1996 contract was an attempt to repay him for his services. It was to be his final contract and I don't think anyone expected for him to play like a $14-16 million player.

He has given the city a lot but I think the city has also contributed to his current status. I'm sure many Houstonians have contributed to his charities or his ventures just because of who he is.

Yeah With Hakeem fair market value is WAY too hard to determine.

Both Mutombo and David are valued for what they bring to their respective teams, not money. The money is how they reimburse their value.

If your reason to pay Hakeem ten is because david and dikembe are getting equal and upwards of that, your reasoning is flawed.

I still believe hes worth in the 5-6, and fair market pushing it to 7.

Dont forget that as of the last few seasons, he still means far fewer games, and in the last two seasons, less production.
