So Apple had it's conference thing today announcing new Apple TV, new iPod Touches, Nanos and shuffles.

They also demoed Epic's new Unreal Engine that they are building for their upcoming mobile games.

There's currently a tech demo available on the App Store; it's free. Called Epic Citadel. Keep in mind that it's just a tech demo so all you can do is run around the town. Having said that:

It looks freakin' AMAZING. Can't believe it's on a celllphone. Looking forward to when Epic pushes the games out that run this thing.

    Here's Epic's page about it:

This is the only decent Youtube footage I could find right now, doesn't really do it justice:
    <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tHX7htYsVDQ?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tHX7htYsVDQ?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

Of course, this is following id recently showing off their new engine for iPhone development:

If Carmack/id and Epic get into a little friendly competition on who can impress more on mobile gaming, everybody wins.

This stuff is amazing. Crazy how far cellphone tech has come. Hopefully it isn't just tech that these guys are working hard at though, and the games turns out to be great as well. Interesting to see how this market plays out in the next few years, as well as how it impacts "traditional" gaming (handhelds and perhaps even consoles).

*Looks over at BlackBerry and scowls.*

It doesn't matter how good the graphics are, you can't play a real game using a touch screen.

Most genres are fine; FPS still need to find the right approach.

RC: agreed, though I do have faith that id and Epic will make somethingvat least entertaining.

Amazing, now if we could just get Apple to add a couple of small Dpads to the back of the phone.

    It looks like Wii graphics.

ARM chips are making its way into netbooks. Heck, the ipad uses a very similar processor to the iphone 4.

The chips that power the Samsung Galaxy phones are pretty close in power. I wonder if they'll fully support the engine to Android, but there's no doubt Apple Store is THE money maker for mobile apps and gaming.

I wonder how Nintendo will adapt to the iphone. Sony already looks slow and defeated in the mobile/handheld arena.

Looks great, but it makes me wonder how much power (as in battery charge) it will use up.

Better yet, via a bluetooth connection. This way it has it's own batteries, no cable, and can be used (with clever design) as both a cradle and a standalone controller. This allows for a more native gameplay experience if connected to a tv via video out.

Pretty nice graphics. Not shocking to me. I have old laptops with less power that push graphics like this.

Now it's time for the avalanche of PC ports to truly begin. A real Civilization port would be awesome. How about Diablo 1 and 2? Heroes of Might and Magic? Elder Scrolls? Half-Life? Let's do this, p**** devs! This huge pre-installed user-base is just waiting for it.

It looks BETTER than wii. I've ran the demo on my phone -- it blows away basically any other game on iPhone graphically.

I just downloaded it...amazing visuals. I cant believe that was on my phone.

Yeah, and the Wii looks like a pile of warm poop compared to this.

Shrink Metroid or Super Mario Galaxy from the Wii down to an iPhone screen and they look the same.

Ok, but nobody has played a Wii on such a small high res screen...Therefore, it looks nothing like what we are used to from a Wii. Sure, the possibility is there, but I'd much rather prefer the graphics I witnessed with this game than anything I have played on a TV with the Wii.

Thats like saying...If you shrink down the PS3 graphics to an iphone screen, itll be better than XBOX graphics. Sure...but the XBOX still has better graphics.

I have already seen some pretty cool things on the EVO, and I am just beginning to scratch the surface.. so hopefully there will be a release of this kind of engine for the strong Android devices soon too..

ID's Rage looks amazing on an iPhone too. Maybe even better than the tech demo of the Epic game.
