    Play chips.

I don't like betting, even nickles and dimes, so I play play chip poker on partypoker.com, usually in tourneys.

And because there is no money involved, and because the kids are out of school, it's getting to be infuriating. The kids just call, and call, and call, and call, and call until they get their straight or their Ace-high turns into Aces on the river. If they don't get what they want, then I needlessly get all their chips, and they move on to the next tourney with their play chips. It's horrible, horrible poker, but I'm left with no options because I promised myself I wouldn't start betting real money.

Anyone here play with play chips? Are there better sites than partypoker for it? I've tried a few different ones, but the calling stations were even worse than the ones at partypoker.

I'm going to go yell at the cat.

I know what you mean, man. I used to play on that site a lot, but you hit it right on the head- people don't give a CRAP when they aren't playing with real money, so they make bad calls, crazy bets, etc. And when they are knocked out, they just move on and screw around some more. It really doesn't help anyone out at all- can't get a feel for how to play a hand when other opponents not only aren't playing somewhat conventionally, but they really don't even care.

I have this one World Series of Poker game that plugs into the A/V slots on my TV that is pretty cool, but more than anything else I do enjoy playing with friends. We usually don't play with incredibly high stakes, but atleast I'm playing with people who aren't just there to screw around- they play the right way. We've had a couple $10 buy-in tourneys the past year or two, so we are still playing for money but not insane amounts. And when we've gotten up to 15 or 16 people, that small buy-in turns into a nice first place prize. More than anything else, it's a lot of fun, though.

Yea, playing with play chips suck when people just treat it as that. Really hard to play as you would for real if they don't.

I've been playing with real money over the past couple of weeks. I've invested (stupidly gambled) 100 bucks and I've lost about 25...keep hovering around the 60-80 mark.

just play with real money or else you are wasting your time. Nobody plays the same when no money is involved. Its like having sex with a blow up doll.

They play this bad if not worse on the real money tables. The cash tournaments are a tad bit better on Party Poker, but not by much. If you want real poker, head to a casino or host a game with your friends. The online poker madness isn't worth the time invested anymore.

I don't look at it like that. I don't win real money when I beat someone at basketball, but I enjoy it just the same.

I haven't played online in months, but I found that the smaller buy-in/limit tables had better, more reliable players. People tended to play like they would at a real cash game at a 20 fake-dollar table than they did at a 10,000 fake-dollar table.

I used to play on ultimatebet. You would have to acquire a lot of money to move up to the higher stakes tables. People would play more for real at those.

yeah, but its different, typically in basketball you play the same regardless of whether or not there is money on the line. Its not that they play harder in poker if there is money, but the strategy is different, nobody folds in texas holdem when there is no money on the line and folding is the name of the game. That would be like playing basketball with someone who traveled the whole time since dribbling is such a big part of the game. You would not enjoy that.

Inspired by this thread, I just played my first tourney on partypoker. I finished in second place! :)

In the end, my 66 99 lost to QQ 66. Oh well.

I understand the part about the values of intensity changing, I just don't like the comparison to sex with a blowup doll (not that I would know what that feels like  )

The point is the love of the game, not the reward at the end.

I am so tired of these college kids who send me resumes with:

    Activities: Texas HoldEm Poker

Come on, why not also add "Binge drinking, smoking bowls, ogling coeds, betting on the Broncos / Raiders teaser" and other things that every friggin person I went to Vandy did???

And I love that they specify the game, too. God forbid they played "Baseball" or "Guts", because in that case, we won't hire you. We're a Texas HoldEm investment bank, didn't you hear? Morgan hires "Baseball" players.

    Seriously.

However I must admit that I myself love the game. Just wanted to rant about these summer interns....none of them are hot, either, dammit.

That is exactly why I stopped playing the free tables online. I have heard that Absolute Poker runs some free tourneys where that kind of stuff is minimized some since there are small payouts for the winner, but haven't tried one.

I play for real money on pokerroom.com, and let's just say it's not a hobby I recommend.

poker is only poker when money is involved. which is why no-limit is the cadillac of all pokers. because then you don't have people limping all the way through the pot/raise limits to catch their crap. when money is involved, it changes things...people play tighter.

any real poker player doesn't play poker for free (online is a bit different, since there are numbers - although they are meaningless in reality, so some play online and real and can still be considered "real" poker players). there's some guys at my dorm that play every tuesday for free. they asked me to play - i told them to **** off. there's no point. we might as well play the cards face up - because nobody's gonna fold. then it's just luck and no strategy. real money brings out strategy which brings out the essence of poker.

See, to me, it's about winning and losing. Losing sucks balls, and winning doesn't.

I play to win. To outsmart people and beat them at a game they think they're good at. Getting 200 bucks for it means nothing, the point is to win, not to pay the cable bill.

I understand that but at the same time when you play for nothing...people will stay in and catch crap on the turn and the river and there is no strategy behind it at all. People will not play the way the game is meant to be when there is nothing involved.

I play free poker tournaments here at live on Tuesday and Fridays and some of the people play just like they would with money but then you have other people who play and dont give a damn and will wait all the way to the river and catch something when they wouldn't have stayed in a hand if money was involved.

On the other hand we play together for money a few times a month and the game is completly differet. We fold when were supposed to raise right play the players and bluff and all that stuff, use actual strategy....Money DOES change the way 90% of the people play. there is always that 10% who will play stupid regardless and those are all dead money basically to me.

The whole strategy behind hold em is to outsmart your opponent even if you have nothing or you do. Get them out of the hand before a hand that can beat you shows up, or if they are wiling to take a risk...make it nice and expensive for them to see that next card.

Guys, I understand that the game is turned on its ear when no money is involved. I understand why they're calling and calling and calling. I just want to know if that is going to change much with the smaller money tourneys online, is it full of kids with their parents' credit cards pulling the same routine?
