I have never had anything but an out patient proceedure, tomorrow I am going on an IV drip, and though the surgery is not supposed to be complicated, I am still a bit uneasy about it.

What does it feel like to go under? Do you feel the surgery, or do you just wake up later and it is all done?

    Do you dream?

Any experiences would be most helpful, as I am sort of freaking out about the whole thing.

And to top it off, I can't find my V-Span pillow....

    UGH !!

    ;)

Are you getting plastic surgery just so you can create a new identify for yourself in the GARM?

    BTW, good luck DD.

You shouldn't feel a thing... they'll probably have you count backwards from ten or something, and by the time you reach seven, it'll be lights out. When you wake up, you'll probably feel like you were only out for a few minutes. Depending on how major the surgery is and what's being operated on, you may feel some pain when you wake up as the anesthesia wears off, but they'll give you painkillers, probably some sort of codeine ie. vicodin, hydrocodone, etc.

Good luck!... and relax too - Houston has some of the best medical facilities in the world!

Basically, they'll inject you with a sedative just before you go into the OR. They'll tell you to count backwords from 100. You'll probably be out before you hit 90 and won't wake up until you're in recovery. It will seem like only seconds have passed. I don't remember dreams so I can't tell you anything there.

Whatever you do (especially if it's a knee or another joint), finish the rehab. Yes, it's hard and it hurts. It's the only way to truly heal.

    Good Luck.

I've gone under a few times. There's no pain involved at all. I actually like that feeling of dozing off.

The harder part is waking up, you don't want to, but they keep telling you to.

The worst part is seeing your private parts all over the internet after the nurses get through taking pics and laughing while you are out.

When I went it under it was no problem. The first the nurse just asked me are you getting sleepy yet and I replied no. That's all I remember. LOL! :D

The second time the guy came in and said this is gonna be like slamming a 12 pack so get ready. I started laughing and that's all I remember. LOL! :D

I just remember the nurse being really hot.

And then I wake up hours later to this fat dude with a dirty beard.

i've "been under" at least 12 times, and going under itself is no big deal, but be prepared to be a bit groggy and disoriented when you wake up, perhaps a bit nauseus as well. you'll be thirsty too, and need to pee, and you won't be able to, and they won't take the goddam IV out until you do, and so, that'll suck...do you wear glasses or contacts? if the latter, and you can keep them in, it'll help when you wake up.

my son, who's 3, just had his first experience a few weeks ago. he was up and running around in a couple of hours.

I've only been put under once and that was when I had my wisdom teeth removed.

All I remember was sitting in the surgery room in pretty much a dental chair while a nurse was watching over me telling me she's here all the while the IV drip of the anesthetic was knocking me out. When I came back into consciousness it felt like all but 5 seconds had passed when really it had been closer to 45 minutes. Both sides of my mouth had been filled with padded gauze to help soak up the blood leaking from the wounds where they removed my wisdom teeth. But the surgery itself felt like it lasted all of 5 seconds.

    That explains a lot...

Oh, and good luck DaDa...just don't be 'under' for too long or you will have missed V-Span's comments to the Greek media when Adelman decides to bench him.

I went under at 8PM in 2003 to re-construct my knee. I remember counting backwards from 10. I got to 8... then I woke up and asked anybody in the room why I was shivering. They told me to breathe deeply a few times. The shivering ceased and I felt okay. Went home the next noon. Remarkable.

I've been under 5 times and each time seems a little bit different. None of the times did they have me count backwards but everytime I was out completely with no dreaming.

The first time I was really nervous and the initial injections didn't knock me out right away I remember them putting me on the operating table and looking at the surgery light. It got really bright like the way movies will do a fade to white and I felt a wave of cold and came to in the recovery room. I was really disoriented and couldn't focus. I remember feeling something on my face and pushing it off, which was the oxygen mask but otherwise I was barely aware of where I was.

After the first few times it wasn't so bad.

Likewise, I have gone under three times and every time they ask me to count backwards, I wake up at like 7 still trying to count backwards with the surgery already done.

The best was when I had my wisdom teeth out about a decade ago. They told me to count backwards and I was out at about 8. When I got to seven my entire mouth was filled with gauze and cotton and I was trying to let everyone know that I was still awake. Then on the way out of the doc office to my brothers car there was the infamous "Grope" that I will never live down. Apparently, under the influence of the anesthesia, I became extremely grateful to one of the nurses and gave her a nice solid gluteus maximus patting, in true baseball congratualtory form, right in front of my mom and brothers.

My dad just had a heart valve replaced back in october. the surgery was a little daunting but he is more active now than he was five years ago.

I've been under twice - no dreams. Felt like I was sleeping for a few minutes, then I slowly awoke, disoriented.

I've also seen many people surgery from inside the room....that's a cool experience.

    I've been under 3 times.

You are just lying there on the operating table looking around and then you are in the recovery room after surgery. It's like a jump through time and not like anything you have experienced. What is odd though is that you wake up and go in and out of consciousnesses. THe car ride home will likely seem like seconds. You know when you wake up from a nap in the middle of the day? How you have those few seconds of confusion? It's sort of like that but not as bad.
