I have recently taken an interest in hunting and hope to go on my first hunting trip sometime before the year is up. I have signed up for Hunter's Ed classes (which everybody in Arkansas who hunts must take if they were born after 1968) and will finish up with my classes on November 17th. I hope to hunt all sorts of animals, deer, turkey, doves, rabbits, squirrels etc. but mostly deer, trukey, dove, rabbit, and squirrel. Here is a full list of the game we Arkansans are allowed to hunt legally. I can probably hunt everything on the list except elk because they were just reintroduced to Arkansas several years ago and their numbers are so scarce only about 20 permits are handed out each year to legally hunt them. What kinds of game are there down in Texas? Anyway, I need some good links on hunting websites and I mean on any and everything because I have never been hunting except for dove and rabbit but that was ages ago. I need help on everything! If any of you hunters on the BBS have any tips, tricks, etc. please share them as well.
Here's my thoughts on hunting, originally posted on 10/11/2000. My views haven't changed. http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14242 And another hunting thread: http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17021
Behad, I respect your opinions on hunting and I do agree that hunting purely for "sport" is bad. I mean why would you want to kill an animal just to say look at the size of the thing. Now when you hunt for food, which I intend to do, it is a different story. I know that I may not need to kill these animals for food but it's kind of like a delicacy. You cannot find deer, squirrel, rabbit, quail, etc. for sale at my local Wal-Mart like you can chicken, beef, pork, etc. I'd eat what I kill, I wouldn't stuff or mount anything so I am solely in it for the meat.
I rarely hunt anymore but still enjoy it when I get time. I'm another who was taught never to shoot anything unless you plan to eat it, so sport hunting is out of the question for me. Good luck in you hunt(s).
Cheers to meat hunters!!! Good luck to ya man--remember this, never and I mean NEVER shoot at a running deer unless you are Carlos Hatchcock Jr.(Marine sniper of legend and lore). My brother taught me to shoot once and only once; respect your game by killing it cleanly and directly. Shooting at a running animal, no matter how tempting, is wrong -imo- unless you are top-notch marksman and I'm a pretty damm good shot myself and don't do it. If you hunt smart and with patience, you won't need to take long or tricky shots--again, best a' luck to ya! Where are ya Buck? I know you got something good to say!
Supposedly...(thanks, boomboom...) Shot placement is important,...my most versatile arm is the Ar15 with a flat top (A3) in .223...I can shoot anything from squirrels to full-size deer with it,...( and they <deer> drop just as quick mind you with 64 grain power point as 150 grain .30-06....trust me, I know) I am very accurate with my AR15's, but it also means, I have to be very good with shot placement when hunting deer... btw, Lil Pun... feral hogs is plentiful where I'm from and very fun to hunt since there is less specification on the game...I'm glad you took the sport...Enjoy it. Respect the wood...There is nothing better than being in tune and admiring our valuable wildlife resources...Good luck... p.s. Beware the legend of the deep wood squirrel though...It has been known to attack man!
