Does anyone know why there are 100s of police/emergency vehicles heading south on I-45? They stoped all traffic southbound for 5-10 minutes just south of the beltway to let hundreds of emergency vehicles on 45 south. B
Yeah, I wish I had taken Galveston road instead, but I'm really curious as to what the heck is going on. B
I work and live in the Clear Lake area and normally go to lunch around 12:30ish with my wife. Today she was running behind so we didn't get to go out until 12:45 and on the way to the restaurant we were going to eat at in Webster, we almost were run over by several police cars doing high speeds on the backroads by NASA. Apparently we were about ten seconds behind some guy who was trying to get away from the cops. It was pretty wild as were were almost right in the middle of a high speed chase. There were Webster and Seabrook police along with Harris County deputies. Apparently the guy they were chasing made it to the Gulf Freeway before he crashed. Pretty wild stuff.
I know that last night there was a big chemical (benzene) fire down that way where all the refineries are but I don't know why cops would be going.
I checked click2houston and the Houston Chronicle, but I didn't find anything out. Maybe someone on here who works for the Houston Police might know. B
Published June 13, 2003 LEAGUE CITY — A police pursuit that started in Seabrook on Thursday ended in League City, but not before the erratic driving caused several accidents. League City patrol officer Jason Clifton said Seabrook police tried to stop a man in a 1981 Ford pickup truck about 1 p.m. but the driver refused to pull over. Clifton said the man drove to Interstate 45, where League City police assumed the pursuit as the man drove the wrong direction down the northbound freeway lanes near NASA Road 1. Clifton said the driver left the freeway at the FM 518 on-ramp, drove under the freeway, through a parking lot, then headed south on the southbound feeder road. With several patrol cars closing in, the driver opened the truck’s passenger door and dove out while the vehicle was moving about 40 miles per hour, Clifton said. The truck jumped a curb, crossed a meridian and ran into a freeway sign where it came to rest, Clifton said. The driver climbed over a six-foot fence and dove headfirst through barbed wire at the top, then ran south along the fence, Clifton said. Clifton said he caught the man when they came to an opening in the fence. Jose Luis Esquivel, 32, of Seabrook, was detained by League City police and taken into custody by officers from Seabrook. He was charged with evading arrest using a motor vehicle and theft, both felonies. Bonds had not yet been set late Thursday afternoon.
Thanks for the update! I didn't know they needed that much manpower for a car chase, but if it was for the safety of everyone on the freeway, I understand. I was just shocked by the shear number of emergency vehicles, and the shutting down of the freeway for 10-15 minutes. B
that was actually at Nova Chemicals in LaPorte off of 146, it is a long way from 45 South.. I found it funny that the news services dont have a clue when something happens over on the East side..first they were reporting it as being in Pasadena, then they were saying Bayport. Bayport was actually close, but it took them forever to figger it out.
And why wasn't this caught on Cops? This jackass thought he could get away....should of stuck w/ playing GTA Vice....
Hope there's some good video footage. I expect to see this on World's Wildest Police Chases. (soon, please... hurry up... )
I can't believe the guy dove out of a truck moving 40 mph and could still climb a fence and jump thru barbed wire.
