http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2007/07/fishy-behavior.html Fishy behavior July 18, 2007 12:01 PM People Magazine reports that former Vice President Al Gore's youngest daughter, Sarah Gore, 28, married businessman Bill Lee at the Beverly Hills Hotel earlier this month. For the rehearsal dinner, at Beverly Hills' Crustacean restaurant, executive chef Helene An prepared a six-course menu that included Chilean sea bass. (LINK) One problem, says Rebecca Keeble, program manager for Humane Society International. Chilean Sea Bass is "arguably one of the world's most threatened fish species" who says the selection indicates "only one week after Live Earth, Al Gore's green credentials slipped." Writing in the Daily Telegraph today (LINK), Keeble points out that "Working with non-government organisations, the Humane Society International's focus is now on pursuit of illegal fishing operators who, in the rush to cash in on the highly valued species, plunder stocks with no regard for sustainability." Tom Brokaw, among others, has covered how this delicious fish's popularity is leading to problems (LINK) with its population. Is Gore to be chastised for every fish that shows up on his plate? It's not as if he was eating a Bald Eagle. (Whoops -- weren't those just taken off the Endangered Species List!) On the other hand, could this be seen as the environmentalist version of Sen. David Vitter's public santimony/private enjoyment of love with a red-lit glow? You be the judge -- jpt
agree and agree. The odd part to me is that, for a fish that is supposedly so endangered, you can get it lots of places. Do they farm-raise it or something?
this article is totally irrelevant...al gore's main concern is with reducing pollution and benefitting the environment (trees etc.) his family has little to do with endangered species
Hmmm. Curious that the original opinion piece appeared in a Murdoch-owned paper. Wonder what the odds of that are? Anyway, to sum up: Chilean Sea Bass is legal. It's importation is documented. It is not endangered. In spite of the Gore rhetoric, the Humane Society International of Australia representative admits their focus is the "pursuit of illegal fishing operators who, in the rush to cash in on the highly valued species, plunder stocks with no regard for sustainability." We also have a strange reference to eating Bald Eagles and a ridiculous comparison to David Vitter. And... we have a nice sentence about how Brokaw has covered the issue as if he did it on the evening news instead of a web page interview with an author on the Today website. Finally, we have the implication that Gore should be responsible for what everyone in his vicinity eats or does and if that is really the standard that folks want to play with, then what's Neil Bush up to these days? Cheney's son-in-law? In short, it's not exactly on par with covering up Bush administration actions regarding the exploitation of a soldier's death for political ends.
Al Gore hasn't said word one about going vegan or protecting endangered species. This is like yelling at Nancy Reagan for having a glass of wine just because she spearheaded "Just Say No."
also agree. FYI - it cannot be farm raised (lives in VERY deep water). Lots of eateries are slowly phasing it out though (thankfully). Rimrocker, the chilean sea bass is very much endangered.
al's sort of a tool in general. Funny story but its not the first of its kind...like having concerts around the globe to promote awareness of global warming, i.e. private jets burning thousand of gallons of fuel, electricity for the show itself, etc.
He is a tool. But still, I'd rather have Gore President any day of the week, and week of the year, any year of the century, and so on over that parasite and his cockroaches in office right now.
maybe. buy me a drink or something... but whats so full of crap about seeing the ridiculousness of the Live Earth concerts and their "carbon footprint"?
