somewhat inspired by the "What age did you hit a homerun?" thread..

I felt compelled to find out who here has actually played/participated in high school sports..

there's also a poll to find out the overall majority.. (If I did it right, if not.. oh well)

so.. as the thread title denotes and asks.. who here has played..?

along with voting.. do list the sport and position/s if you played several throughout your high school years.. and how well you faired at each respectively..

also, if not.. have you played any form of organized team sports at an earlier or older age..?

I myself played baseball.. loved pitching... wouldn't have mind at all.. if I had ended up making a career of it.. instead of music..
but unfortunately.. other than sporting a decent 84mph fastball for the HS level.. and my personal fancying of the split-fingered variety.. I was less than mediocre... an exceptionally terrible curve.. and piss poor command.....

The first high school I went to, Groton, only had 350 students, and sports were required, so I played Football, Basketball and rowed Crew freshman year where we lost every race; then switched from Crew to baseball for my sophomore year. I started one game of JV basketball as a sophomore, then we switched coaches and I pretty much didn't play at all again all year (even though the coach unnecessarily made a point of promising before every game that he would play everyone).

I crash-landed for a month or two at Baytown Christian Academy, where being 5'8" and black apparently makes you a young Felipe Lopez. Then I transferred to Baytown Lee where I was, literally, seventh-string tight-end on the football team: I'm pretty sure UIL rules prohibit them from cutting you if you're a Senior. Never spent so much time, energy and optimism on something I completely, utterly failed at.

Basketball. Played the power forward/center position. Probably average or maybe a little below average compared to my peers, although I was pretty inconsistent (sometimes great...sometimes not so great); I had a pretty nice free throw streak going where I couldn't miss, but then the offseason came...and I lost my touch. :( Think I was too nervous to play organized ball or something since I generally played much better in pickup games. My guard mentality didn't help me at my position either (watched a little too much of Steve Francis at the time).

Track. Did pretty much everything except long distance running (800M on up), hurdles (although I practiced it), and the pole vault IIRC (no one at my school did that). Skill varied based on the event, although at the very least, I did a decent job of competing at them all (kind of difficult to do well in the throwing events given the size disadvantage). I was probably best as a sprinter (100M/200M). My senior year, I strained my hamstring and pretty much missed the whole season IIRC, so I basically became a manager of sorts. My knowledge of nearly all the events really came in handy then. :)

Played football in Jr. High (TE/DE), and was actually pretty decent I think, except for catching the ball. I had more fun with the other two sports though, so I dropped the sport in HS.

Didn't play baseball, although I somewhat regret that decision (would have been tough to juggle it and track though). Not too many other sports were offered at my school. Occasionally tennis, golf, and powerlifting IIRC, but I didn't try those.

If it wasn't obvious, I went to a pretty small school, so it was pretty easy to make the teams and even varsity (pretty much all Juniors and Seniors that tried out automatically made varsity).

I selected basketball and football, although I only played football my freshman year. I was good at football (quarterback/safety) but there were too many politics involved so I chose to focus on basketball instead.

I didn't grow much in high school, so while I was a post player as a freshman (Freshman A team) and a sophomore (JV team), I ended up playing shooting guard on varsity the next two years. I was undersized even for a high school SG, but I could play a little bigger than I really was (5'8" or 5'9") because of my jumping ability. I loved warm ups because all the fans would get a chance to see this short white guy throwing down 2 handed dunks like it was nothing. Now, I wasn't a great player in high school...primarily a shooting specialist really...but I did have the chance to catch on with a couple of small colleges, including Trinity. However, I ended up declining because (it's a long story) my coach made me hate playing organized basketball. I just wanted to get away from it at that point. A lot of my teammates felt the same way.

*Probably worth nothing that I attended a Texas 5A school.

I played four sports my freshman year, after that I played three my soph and junior year and senior year played two.

Soccer, basketball, volleyball and softball (I voted baseball, because softball obviously wasn't a choice - we did play fast and slow pitch both)

Edit: Since people put their positions...

Basketball - undersized power forward/center with a knack for rebounding and defense (lol sound familiar?)

Soccer - fullback and goalie - mainly goalie

Softball - fast pitch - Pitcher and Catcher - caught for everyone but myself obviously - slow pitch - third base

Volleyball - setter and defensive specialist - I played before a libero was allowed in high school games or I probably would have been one.

I played JV baseball during my sophomore year in HS (our HS started at 10th grade) - center field. I had to move mid season and never really got back into it.

    Football, basketball, shot put.

I was terrible at the shot, not so bad at basketball, but never played varsity because our talent level was so great. Was adequate at football, but nothing special.

I got much better at basketball in college, finished second in intramurals in badminton (there was this one guy from China who had a killer drop shot), and won intramurals in volleyball and horseshoes. Oh, and was on a third place bowling team.

Football for 2 years. Running back. Did well my first year getting moved up to JV with some spot duty at WR on varsity. Best day ever was a JV game that we won 21-14 with me scoring all 3 tds. Then that night after the JV game, I played some spot duty at WR in the varsity game and caught a TD on a trick play (HB toss pass). The next year I got moved up to varsity and didn't really get to play much. I was on the depth chart at RB, but rarely played because the starters were bigger/stronger than me. Filled in some at WR throughout the year on varsity though.

Ended up dropping football after two years to focus solely on basketball. Earned All-state honors at PG/SG. During one year, I hit a game-winning shot in one game (unreal feeling), and then ended up scoring 42 in the state championship game later that year (had scored an increasing number of points in the 20s in each playoff game that year, so I predicted hitting in the 30s in the championship game - got 42 instead on 20/25 shooting). Got some scholly offers for smaller in-state schools, but decided to go out of state for college. Too short to play at a big school.

I went to school in Singapore for a semester. Even though I'm only 6'1", I'm taller than a vast majority of the natives. :D So I played center and power forward. The tallest person I ever had to play against was 6'3" and he was an American too.

I helped start the roller hockey team at St. Thomas. I was the starting goalie.

My best sport in high school was track, I graduated in 08. My senior year we had a DOMINATE shot put team, we would finish 1 2 3 in almost every meet and then we all choked at the SPC Conference meet

Football: - Your basic Yard football superstar/Real football scrub. Played corner, running back, strong & free safety, receiver, middle linebacker, defensive end. And that wasnt cuz of "versality". I somehow sleptwalked through 3.75 years of football & didnt know what the heck I was doing. Just couldnt deliver big hits.

    Track: 100m + relay, 200m, 400m + relay, occassional mile run.
Finally get the call my junior year to run a varsity meet in the 400 > hardly slept the night before > day of I knew cuz I was catching a cold but toughed it out > took cold medicine, still ran > EPIC FAILURE ensued - finished dead last > didnt p***y out running off the track halfway through, finished "like a man" I thought > coach proceeded to call it the most disgusting display on a track he'd ever seen

And the coach just happened to also be my position football coach, who always favored the hard working hustling overachiever who's the "pick me-pick me" type over the laid-back goes with the flow guy but more talented guy who "coasted". I kiiiinda suspected that during the football season months before but that confirmed it. This was the COOOOLEST coach on campus everyone loved even regular students. But with me he was kinda cold. And it pretty much continued into spring football. It didnt matter that I was also running with a CAST on my broken right wrist either, doubling up on both after-school football workouts and track to get faster. Stuff the other guys WERENT doing. And later it was actually the FLU I had and missed a day of school cuz of it. And in another misunderstanding I got banned from the team entirely....in yet another attempt to balance what to do for track, football and school. Way too much politicking, all that stuff...

But even if given extra chances I'da still sucked 4 out 5 times, no excuses :) I was 4 TIMES the headcase as Tracy McGrady, & somehow I was the last to know, its how it goes.... & really I wish I'da never played any sport.

I was a Texas state medalist AAU swimmer as a youth.

By junior high I was hooked on basketball and started skipping swim practice to play hoops at the Westside (Dad's Club) YMCA. I played basketball through high school varsity.

Football was my favorite sport. Played through middle school but gave it up for high school basketball. Often wish I had kept it up. I had decent size (6'2") and a pretty good arm and great field vision-- the Joe Montana that never was! :D

In college I was the fencing champion in my PE class. You should have seen the finals: me versus this 5'7" Japanese kid. I'm not sure if it was an upset that I won or if it was to be expected... man, he was quick!

    Basketball.

Was the Point Guard for our A Grade High School team.
Played Point Guard for the Combined Colleges State team and than played back up Point for the entire State selection team.

Was playing at Nationals in Div 1 (was really 2 - Championship Division was really 1.. But the team that won was ridiculous.. AJ Ogilvy (who now plays for Vanderbilt) just destroyed everyone.) anyway.. first 2 minutes into our first game i burst all the blood vessels in my hand and the hospital said not to play again for another 3 weeks. Well. The next night i was playing again. But eh....
