from engadget good to see that they'll be putting some dough to webos. would have been a shame to see a groundbreaking os (first gen hardware on sprint not so much) go to waste. hints at a tablet in addition to more hardware=win
HP also has a nice TouchScreen computer [Cannot say I have played with it but it looks good] marry the two together could have some fun Rocket River
took me a while to get that. in any event, the only why the tablet scenario could fail is with some of the crappy hardware that hp has come out with (as of late it's been pretty good). with true multitasking (is that hyphenated?), flash capability, more developer support since the merge, and iphone apps easily portable... it's more likely to win.
Early rumors are the Slate is a bit chunky and laggy in terms of feel and response time. I don't know if that'll be true when it comes out, but... No slate/tablet will beat the iPad on merit alone. It's gotta have a "cool" factor to it. If it doesn't, then there's your possible failure scenario. Also, the initial Slate is running Windows, so I'm not sure when a newer version would run WebOS. I doubt it'll happen for a year or two. This may be more so they can jump into the smart phone market. Dell is coming out with their phone. Microsoft is coming out with theirs. Apple has theirs. HP wants a piece of that action, too, is my guess.
I was fortunate enough to make a pretty penny betting on this buyout. Hopefully HP will be pumping webOS w/steroids.
anyone have a palm pre or pixi? i have an old ass centro and want to upgrade. (im on sprint). so i was thinking of getting a hero or that new 4g phone. but if webOS isn't going vaporware I might consider.
Get the EVO 4G, it's gonna be pretty sexy and has much better hardware than the web os options on sprint. 8MP Camera, 512MB Ram, 1GHz Snapdragon CPU , 4.3' screen...pretty sexy
Yes sir, I believe you could actually snatch one up for $49. I'm still happy with my Palm Pre. Would consider the EVO 4g but too expensive.
i was shocked as well btw, good move on HP, its been awhile since they were in the Smartphone business and this gives them some life OS, i gotta admit, the webOS was better than I thought, but still prefer Android
Nope. The consensus is that Web OS is the superior operating system. The major problem was the hardware and lack of decent advertising. Remember the creepy woman on the original commercials? That sold alot of phones didn't it? Compare multitasking between the two. How anyone can say android is superior is beyond me. Palm's failure was unfortunate, but inevitable. I wonder if HP continues the Pre line. It's a good thing though; maybe HP can put the kind of support behind WebOS that Palm was unable to do. in addition, it stops HP from trying to shoehorn their own UIs into devices like tablets (hopefully). If they can scale WebOS to such a device, you have a tablet with lots of potential.
should be interesting. doubtful that the hp slate will be re-worked just because palm has been snatched up and i too see no "cool factor" with the current slate (yea... it's bulky as hell). slate is definitely not in the same market as ipad, though others will put it there just for comparisons sake. actually, nothing is... the ipad is just that unique. not a netbook. not really a tablet. it's weird, and though sales have been strong, it's hard to forecast how the thing will do a year from now. from what i've read from the link in the my original post and everything else from yesterday, the scaling was another reason that palm was acq. ruby has mentioned palm will continue with it's new device(s) that have been in the works for some time now. i could see a webos device doing exactly what the ipad does (more of a media device) a tad bit less than a year from now, but i still don't see the benefits of something like that over a smartphone other than e-reading (weird sentence). maybe one of the ipad owners could share it's benefits. huh? you go to ces and carrying around a centro? webos won't be vaporware. man, i've been here (making a smartarse comment here and there). where have you been? oddly enough, prior to this thread i've made a few posts in d&d. you shall soon see the light, my friend.
Sorry. Most impartial reviewers disagree. The BIGGEST advantage that Android has on WebOS is that it's had a little more time to bake in and get developer support. It'll be interesting now that HP will throw their weight behind WebOS that hopefully the tide will turn. The video from Xenon in this thread clearly points that out.
i got centro when it first came out...along time ago. i never switched to at&t cause i get a really good deal with sprint (additional discounts).
HP does not scream "innovator" to me, for some reason, at least not like Google and Apple do. Innovation is an absolute necessity in this market.
