My brother-in-law has ended up with a diamond engagement ring he does not currently have a use for. He bought it from Zales several months ago, but because he took so long before trying to return it, they will no longer take it back (nor buy it). So, now he has to find a jeweler to buy the ring. What is the best way to go about recouping his money on this ring? Can he expect to get back what he paid? Are there any jewelers you'd recommend he deal with or avoid? He has all the paperwork on the diamond.
Jewelers don't usually buy rings and if they do they won't give you anything for them. Honestly his best bet may be ebay.
Whoever buys it will be doing so to sell at a profit. I sell guns and the average payout is 50% of resale value, which would be significantly less than he payed for it because it is now 'used'. I've know of other businesses where they pay as low as 25% of resale value.
poor guy is going to get ripped off twice. once for buying it from zales, second time trying to get something for it.
this would be my suggestion as well.... if he doesnt like that idea, try ebay and if nothing else a pawn shop. itll be pretty difficult to find a jeweler who will buy it back.
That always sucks sorry to hear about your brother in law JuanValdez 1. It's from Zales, the setting is worth NOTHING to a jeweler he will buy it at scrap gold prices 2. It's from Zales, it's at most an IGI graded diamond 3. His best bet to make any money off it is to a. Sell the stone by itself for about 1/3 the cost of the ring to a local jewler or pawn shop b. Put some hard work into it and put an ad out on Crags list and Ebay and try to recoup about 1/2 of what he paid If it were me I'd save it and try to use the diamond in the next ring. (If he thinks he ever wants to try and get married again) If he used a credit card he could always give them a call and see if they have an extended return policy.
Pace around outside a Zales, and as couples pass by mumble to yourself "Anybody got an extra ring, looking for a ring?" It works outside Toyota Center...
I would just hold on to it. Then when he finds a special someone tell him to scrap the setting and go to a classy place and splurge on a nice setting. If he is doing much better than he is now he can turn buy a second stone and give his future wife stud ear rings.
Why doesn't he just wait until he is engaged again to use it? It is not like engagement rings will go out of style.
Okay - I have the exact same problem...but kind of different. I know - it makes no sense. I bought my girlfriend an engagement ring because I was thinking that I'd be done school and that I'd be going to be with her in Nebraska next year. It's a 1.5 carat (total weight) three stone princess cut setting. Anyways, I'm going to be taking one more year of school and we're probably going to postpone our engagement for another year. Also - she has started to have interest in a different setting (still three stone, but set a bit lower). I really like the diamonds and the channel diamonds in the setting as well, but I'd like it all a bit lower. Is a new setting expensive? Where do you find them? How much does it cost to put the new diamonds into the new setting?
He should put it on a cord and wear it around his neck. All kinds of women will zero in on that thing and ask him why he's wearing it. Great story piece, so long as he laughs it off and shows he made lemonade from lemons. He can save $ 2,500.00 on dates, easy, if he plays it smart, and says that's why he likes to "hang out" more, now .
