It seems that every community, city, state has some kind of Sept. 11th rememberance planned...There is also controversy cited in papers about the scope and direction. I want to know what you think is the best way to remember and reflect as this 1 year anniversary is coming up...Also what do you think about the apparent segmentation this day will refect on... For example, you have organizations that will emphasize religious persuasion...and groups that want to appeal to those without religious persuasion...You have documentaries about the women of ground zero (which of course focuses on women)...You also have attention to the animals that were involved...Focus on policeman only, and a focus on firefighters as well... Is it healthy to segment this day? Shouldn't we reflect on everyone involved, or does it make sense to see how different groups were affected?...Is this segmenting process a better way for us to remember and reflect?...
I will celebrate it and have cake and presents. Maybe fire some fireworks. But that's because my b-day is September 11th. As for looking at it the way you are talking about, I don't know. I guess we could look at stories from 9/11, especially good ones. I don't really know though.
Well uhm first of all I think it's idiotic for them to rebuild any building there other than a memorial--if that's what they are planning on doing. We shouldn't make a special holiday for it or anything. People die everyday--unwillingly and they never get any special remembrance other than a funeral if they are lucky. I just say keep the idea of patriotism strong and we should be ok
I think that you try everything you can to turn a negative into a positive all the while being respectful to those who lost their lives in this terrible tragedy. It sounds weird because it is almost like I'm saying there should be a celebration, but we can't mope about it and be in fear because that is exactly what Bin Laden and company wants us to do. So maybe showing a little extra patriotism in a dignified way would be the thing to do, IMO.
off-welfare - I think you're wrong about not rebuilding on the twin towers site. While I see your point, I think the best thing we can do would be to build a bigger and better World Trade Center. Make it huge and grand, and dare any f***ing body to come after it again.
And most of the families of WTC victims that have made public statements agree with you on this. They need to rebuild.
How do you celebrate Pearl Harbor? I think that while this year we may do something . . but it will eventually slack off. 5 year memory. After 5 years . .things loose something around these parts. Rocket River
I think the plan is to rebuild something ..and have a memorial as a part of it. One of the holdups in building 2 more HUGE towers (not to mention 5 decent size surrounding ones like there were) is that many large corporations seem hesitant to take office space in them. In addition, the insurance premiums on the buildings are astronomical. On the other hand, residential and corporate real estate has goen through the roof 10-fold since 9-11 so from a developers point of view, its a no brainer. My opinion...build a small office complex with a nice big memorial (similar to the veterans wall of rememberance in Wash DC).
I kinda see your point that it's not that big a deal for *everybody*, but I know what's up on December 7th every year. September 11th was an even more horrifying attack on civilians. I think it's a bit glib to say that in a mere five years it's going to "loose (sic) something". I am going to deal with September 11th by reflecting on what's really important to me and embracing it. It's how I dealt with it last year and may prove to be the smallest shred of a silver lining.
Just my opinion, but I think RR is right. None of us will ever forget the images of the attack, but over time the emotion fades. It never goes away completely but it becomes , for lack of a better word, tolerable. It may not happen in 5 years, but it will happen.
The infrastructure in that whole area is toast....its going to be years before they can even consider rebuilding anything. The ground is still unstable. I will avoid TV completely during 9/11.....I dont need to have those images thrown in my face over and over again....I remember them quite well. I dont know why people are afraid that something is going to happen on 9/11/2002.....it doesnt make sense. But I'm sure we will be Code Orange or something that day.
I'm probably going to remember 9/11 by consuming several cocktails, because it will be impossible to avoid being reminded of the horrible tragedy, and I will want to numb myself from the memories.
Well that's just my opinion. Thousands died in that big graveyard. Couldn't they just get something like Oklahoma City did and be done with it?
I totally see your point and I'm not trying to diss it or disrepect your opinion in any way. My opinion is just different.
In lieu of, my flight was canceled to Omaha and I was called by the owner of a comedy club here to fill in for Judy Tenuda who couldn't make it. Contemplating as to whether or not a show would be appropriate on this day, I called a comic buddy in NY shortly before my show to ask his opinion. He tearfully advised me that he was about to go on stage in a small comedy club just outside of the city and that the room was packed. As we were about to hang up I could hear the crowd roar in the background and he said, "Remember, the show must go on." With a huge knot in my throat, the show went on. I will remember it this year the same.
If you want to be like most people, you should remember it publicly, in as ostentatious a way as possible.
