Spam and a slow tow for thousands on cruise ship

    Nov 10, 6:55 AM (ET)

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The former fun seekers of the Carnival Splendor are cruising again - but just barely.

In a scenario likely none of its more than 3,000 passengers pictured when they were planning their seven-day jaunt on the Mexican Riviera, the disabled cruise liner was being towed to San Diego by tugboats, and instead of a lavish seafood buffet they were subsisting on Spam.

After two days adrift, the ship began moving again Tuesday when the first of several Mexican tugboats arrived. Rocking gently with the waves, the ship slowly with a Coast Guard boat along one side and the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier on the ship's other side. There were no visible signs of damage.

The 952-foot vessel was expected to arrive in San Diego on Thursday night, Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines said in a statement.

The ship was 200 miles south of San Diego and about 44 miles off shore when an engine room fire Monday morning killed its power and set it adrift.

No one was hurt, but the nearly 4,500 passengers and crew were left without air conditioning, hot water, cell phone or Internet service. The ship's auxiliary power allowed for working toilets and cold water.

U.S. Navy Seahawk helicopters were ferrying supplies, including Spam, crab meat, croissants and Pop Tarts to the ship from the USS Ronald Reagan, an aircraft carrier that reached the Splendor after it was diverted from training maneuvers to help.

The Splendor only had enough food to last through midday Tuesday because refrigerators on the ship stopped working after the power was knocked out, Navy Commander Greg Hicks said. But thousands of pounds of food had been delivered by Tuesday night.

The U.S. Coast Guard and Mexican Navy also sent resources to the ship.

The tugboats were originally set to take the Splendor to Ensenada, Mexico, but the cruise line changed its plans and will attempt to have it towed to San Diego, where hotel and flight arrangements would await the passengers, Carnival said.

If the process moves too slowly, it may still be taken to Ensenada, the statement said.

As as of 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Splendor was about 190 miles south of San Diego, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The ship was being towed by one Mexican tugboat while a smaller counterpart helped the ship maneuver. A third tug boat, the U.S.-based Monterey Bay, was scheduled to arrive late Tuesday night, the paper said.

Toni Sweet, of San Pedro, Calif., was frustrated when she couldn't reach her cousin, Vicky Alvarez, aboard the ship. She said she called her cell phone and did not get an answer.

"We know everything is fine, but we're just worried," Sweet said. "She was nervous about going on a cruise ship even before this happened and now with this, I don't think she'll ever go again."

Carnival spokeswoman Joyce Oliva said the ship's command is able to communicate with outsiders on a backup system.

Carnival Corp.'s stock was down about 1 percent Tuesday.

The situation will be costly for Carnival, which is refunding passengers, offering vouchers for future cruises and may have to dry dock the ship if the damage is extensive.

"We know this has been an extremely trying situation for our guests and we sincerely thank them for their patience," Carnival President and CEO Gerry Cahill said in a statement.

Accidents like the engine-room fire are rare, said Monty Mathisen, of the New York-based publication Cruise Industry News.

The last major cruise accident was in 2007 when a ship with more than 1,500 people sank after hitting rocks near the Aegean island of Santorini, Mathisen said. Two French tourists died.

"This stuff does not happen," he said. "The ships have to be safe, if not the market will collapse."

I've heard way too many horror stories about going on cruises to allow me to ever go on a cruise. I know...I know...they're uncommon...tons of people go and love it. Everytime we talk about a trip, my wife shoots down the cruise option immediately...because of the number of stories we've heard from different people.

ya, like you said they are un common. That's like people saying they'll never fly because of the horrible stories / crashes.

But with the # of people that are on these things, the # of incidences is really low.

I have to say, I went on a cruise this past spring break and it was one of the best times I have ever had in my life. Carnival cruise (Triumph) with stops at Belize (meh), Cozumel (double meh), and Rotan (lot's of fun). The time on the cruise was a blast too, but mainly due to all the drinks I'm sure.

Ranks up there with some of my Snowboarding trips around the French and Swiss Alps.

Cruises are the laziest form of travel and should only be socially acceptable for the 65 and over crowd.

except....plane crashes are super rare....there are umpteen million things that can go wrong on a boat out at sea that can absolutely ruin your vacation. assuming your plane doesn't crash, the annoyances you might have on a flight are short-lived.

viruses spread like wildfire. seasick. this power issue. and you can't go anywhere if this a problem. i don't want to even get into the possibilities of someone being infected with the Solanum virus.

i'd rather fly to my spot and park my ass on a beach with my wife :)

this logic loses me entirely, because...while i'm not into cruises...i intend on being lazy during my vacations. that's kinda why i go on vacation.

Which sounds like a great time. That's essentially what I wanted out of our cruise (chilled on the deck in the sun....walked off the ship onto beaches, especially Isla Rotan mahogony bay. I didn't feel like driving for hours....and $$ was a factor for our trip, just made more sense to go on a cruise rather than drive to say....florida (or fly and rent a car).

I'm hoping to go snowboarding on the 1st of January though, so it's all about mixing things up.

And as for the Cruise things about being lazy.....umm....that's the point. After a rough spring, I wanted to just "chill out" and relax...have gourmet food fed to me....drinks....sun...more sun....beaches....water...hmmmm.....

My wife and I will never go on a cruise because our experience indicates that the vast majority of cruise-goers are obnoxious douche canoes.

The point of the cruise is to be lazy, and basically be in a drunken stupor the entire time. And it's hardly a form of travel....you float around on a boat for a few days, drink enough to drown a fish, and come back to land. I'm not seeing why that's only acceptable for people 65 and older....

We are in the same boat (no pun intended). We live by the philosophy that you get what you pay for. If you go on a cheap cruise, you're going to be surrounded by cheap people. I know it's stuck up of me to be this way but I'm a snob so I don't really care. If we go on a cruise again, it will be on an expensive one so that we can weed out the riff raff.

I've been on one 7-day cruise and loved it. This won't stop me from going again.

It's not the same as traveling on your own and staying in a nice resort or something like that, but it might be the best vacation you can get for the price. If you time it right and get a good rate, you are getting lodging and food while going to exotic location for a fraction of what it would cost on your own.

Clutchfans never fails to provide an entirely different perspective on things. lol

The massive amount of people is definitely a negative. But they're very family oriented ... a bunch of kids certainly can be obnoxious.

My family is leaving on a Carnival cruise in two weeks (Cozumel, Jamaica, Cayman).

I've been on two cruises before. Loved 'em!

Never drank a drop of booze, either.

Go to the all inclusive resort Grand Velas in Nuevo Vallarta. It's like a cruise on land.

I went on a cruise a couple years ago and enjoyed it, but I think I would go stir crazy at a certain point. Mine was only a 4 night cruise with no more than a day and a half at sea at any point.

did you go on carnival?? If you did... what did you expect? They cater to college crowds with their low prices. Try going on a higher end cruise and you will see the douche's disappear. I have been on 3 cruises and loved two of them and met some really nice people. The one cruise i went on last year in the Caribbean on Carnival sucked cause of the douches

I wonder which flag this ship sailed under. I know it wasn't USA.

The company better foot the bill for all of the crap the coast guard and navy did for them.
