My father would like to start a website for his business. How do you buy a domain name, and get space to host the website? And approximately how much would that cost a year?

Also, can anybody recommend good services?

I haver an account that cost me $9 for the year. Although I'm just using it as an FTP. They allow you a large amount of bandwidth use.

Got this from another post who referred me.

You will be signing up for 4800 megabytes of storage and 120 gigabytes of transfer PER MONTH for only 10 dollars for a whole year. This is the plan that I am currently signed up for

Step 1: Right click this link and click on open in new window.
Step 2: Click on the $7.95 Managed Web Hosting banner.
Step 3: Click on the 'sign up now' button under Level 1 $7.95 Crazy Domain Insane
Step 4: Click on the "12 months for $119.40" button.
Step 5: Choose a domain name and then click 'Go with this domain'
Step 6: Use the default server name that comes up and click the 'continue' button.
Step 7: Fill in all of your information and then click 'continue'
Step 8: Enter '777' in the optional promo code box and click update. The total should now be $9.24
Step 9: Check the box under Agree to our terms and then click on 'securely pay 9.24'
Step 10: Proceed until your account is set up. Everything should be ready about 30 minutes after you have sent payment.

I don't know if that promotional code works anymore though.

    1) Domain name at GoDaddy.com is 7.95 a year. I would look for them to do that.

    2) Hosting generally cost about $100-$120 a year at most places, but I would do a little research on what you need from web host. For example, if you need to install eCommerce or other miscellaneous applications, you have to make sure your web host support certain databases and programming languages.

    3) [Blatant self promotion]If your dad needs some questions answered (e.g. how to design, what applications he needs and how to market the site), tell him to check out http://www.dreampod.com or email me at bernard@dreampod.com. If needed, we speak fluent mandarin and cantonese at the office too. Our initial consultant sessions are free.[/Blatant self promotion]

Just FYI, I would strongly urge you to register the domain name SEPARATELY from your hosting contract. Our company has dealt many times with people who registered domain names through their hosting company and had problems getting it transferred later.

Domain name ownership is a tricky legal issue, so do yourself a favor and go to http://www.namesdirect.com/ or http://www.godaddy.com/ and register your domain name first. Then, find a decent hosting company and work with them to point your domain at their servers.

Great advice Jeff. We've experienced similar issues in the past where the hosting company want to squat on the domain name and keep it hostage. The domain property is your property and the only way to protect it is to own it.

    hosting.yahoo.com - top-notch stuff, always UP.
    or
www.planetnet.com - ditto on the always up thing, great control panel through websphere
    (*are two I use*)

Ditto on the Hosting vs. Domain thing. Netsol owns the ones I have purchased, while I keep them separately from the Hosting. You get better deals too if your hosting does the domain purchase from you, but you still end up paying the domain company. That's just my experience, though... it may be different now.

You will end up paying about 20 - 35 /year, depending on how many years you purchase. I say go for the HUGE deal of about 10 years, just so nobody steals your identifying domain later.

This is a little beyond hosting, but make sure your host can support a good CMS (Content Management System). A good CMS application will allow you to update the site on the fly without having to contract out minor changes on the site.

Just a question... why would you pay 35 bucks a year and use register.com when there are countless others for under 10 bucks like godaddy.com or mydomain.com? Just wondering.

We have our own stuff, so I haven't checked into standard hosting in a while. There are plenty of places around and lots of forums discussing them.

    http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ is a good resource.

Its a tax write off for my business. From what I have read, register.com has better customer service, but I was very tempted to go with godaddy with my renewal.

I have a question about getting a domain name as well.

My web site (See my signature) is just part of a much bigger web site. The people that own the bigger web site give me the space for free.

Would is be possible to use a domain name for just my section of the web site?

Also, with free re-direction services...its stuffs up my web site counters which I fine suefull for getting information out of.

Would getting a domain name ruin my counter stats?

"My father would like to start a website for his business."

Most of the other topics have been covered, but I would recommend that you choose your domain to fit you marketing strategy.

Silly example: if his business is Joe Enterprises and he sells hammers - don't get joeenterprises.com - instead get hammers.com if possible.

I have a few hundred domains and BY FAR the best money making sites are the ones that are the product name dot com. If he is in a competitive field then it may be pretty spendy for a domain - but I promise the right one can make your business.

A few years ago a guy down the street from me spent 20k for a domain ( i thought he was nuts..) within 1 month he had made that money back and now runs 10 mil yearly on that site.

I wised up and maxed out all my credit cards and bought our main domain for 25k; and it paid for itself within 6 weeks.

"Would is be possible to use a domain name for just my section of the web site?"

yes, you could get leaguefreak.com if available and point it to your site, it would change nothing on your site, code, counters, etc...

another good site with ecommerce and domain forums is
    www.webmasterworld.com
