Has anyone here ever successfully found a new job while still working at the old one? How do you go on interviews? You can't just keep telling your boss that you were sick right?
I'm right with you, vwiggin. I either schedule the interview for the late afternoon, or call in sick.
Good luck to you too. Scheduling for the late afternoon is a good idea. I guess it is easier to say that I have to get off work early and that I will make up the time tomorrow morning or something. Too bad I don't have kids. It seems like kids/spouses are a good source of leaving work early excuses.
I'm in this process right now. But it's easy for me because I work shift work, and I get at least a couple week days off every week. The downside is having to work weekends.
Thanks, and good luck to you. Even if you don't have kids, use your home as an excuse. If you have a house, tell them you have to meet the plumber or the electrician. If you live in an apartment, tell them you have to meet with your landlord to iron out a few things.
Cruise Monster.com while getting paid, and then just come up with various excuses for the interviews... like "I have a dentist appointment" or "I have to pick my brother's kid up from school" or just be like me and be completely honest, they'll think you're bs'ing.
Looking to bail before the Gizmondo craze takes over the world? That Uppsala Mafia must be pretty serious.
Lunch time is another good idea. Unfortunately I have terrible table manners, so if I did a lunch interview I will probably blow it.
lol. Cruising monster.com during work hours can raise a red flag and end up giving you a lot more free time to look for that "other" job.
I've got to say, cruising Clutchfans at work certainly haven't improved employer-employee relations either. Just kidding boss, in case you're reading.
Here's a hint for the interview: be honest about your current job....(and come up with a reasonable reason why you're looking). A friend of mine was just about to hire a guy. He was having lunch with a friend, in the same business, mentioned his new recruit...only to find that his friend had hired him 2 months before! So...no job for him....and a rather interesting performance review coming up when he has his probational review at the old place....
No easy way to do it. You just got to keep making up excuses. You may want to limit your choices to save on time. Good news is your getting interviews. So I like your chances.
My department is going through restructuring and I'll be working on shifts between 8pm-12am. Everyone hates it but also loves it at the same time because going to interviews will be much easier. I mean 8am-12am.
That's a great tip bnb. Too many people are tempted to "fudge" the truth too much during interviews. Unfortunately, most people are terrible liars and more often than not, the lies will come back to haunt you. Thanks for the encouragement PhiSlammaJamma (and fellow clutchfans).
Also, don't be negative about your current job. In fact, talk about how much you love it and how well you get along with everyone and that you really hate to leave, then tell them why you want to leave in a very positive way. Employees don't want to hire other company's malcontents.
The best thing you can say in an interview about why you are looking, is to explain that your opportunities for promotion and advancement are limited where you are, and that you want to find a workplace that rewards workers who excel.
