So my wife and I just got into a disagreement about the 'normal' way to eat a bagel. I said the 'proper' way to eat a bagel when your sitting down at a table would be to cut it length wise, put maybe some cream cheese on it and eat it open face. She said no way! People always cut it, put cream cheese and reassemble the bagel and eat it like a sandwhich. I said, yea if you eat a bagel on the go then that is fine but you wouldn't (or shouldn't) eat a bagel that way at say a brunch. She said I'm full of crap. Google searches reveal no answer either way. If you consider yourself at all knowledgable on the subject then please help me settle this matter. My marriage is on the line!!!

Like a sandwich? It should only be like a sandwich if there is something inside besides cream cheese, like egg or sausage.
You are correct. Tell your wife to consider herself served.

I have breakfast at Tim Horton's (Canadian coffee and breakfast chain) quite often and I've always seen people eat bagels one half at a time when there's something like cream cheese on it. When there's egg or sausage in between that's when you eat it like a sandwich.

Tell your wife there was another person in history who ate his bagels closed.....Adolf Hitler. Does she want to be like Adolf Hitler?

Seriously, only a Nazi would eat his/her bagel closed when there's only cream cheese on it. What's the point of re-assembling it after you cut it?

If you're on the go, eat it like a sandwich. If you're not on the go, eat a real breakfast.

Wow I had no idea there was a "proper" way of eating a bagel. I learn something everyday from CFnet.

I usually dip my bagel in a jar of Nutella (as I do with everything) when I'm at home watching TV or something.

One half at a time. If you eat it like a sandwich, you greatly increase the chance that the pressure of the top half will push the cream cheese out the back giving you a whitish, creamy substance in your lap... this is not good because all you did for it was eat a bagel the wrong way.

I think the proper way to eat a bagel is however the person wants to eat a bagel.

As a jewish person... my knowledge will confirm that your version of eating the bagel is correct.

The bread to cream cheese ratio would be way too high if you ate it like a sandwich

I would say that there's no reason to put the bagel back together, but I wouldn't call it "improper."

I actually eat my bagels with nothing added, so I usually just tear off small bite-sized pieces.

yes, correct to slice the bagel, put cream cheese on, and eat the 2 halves separately.

I only do that with boring bagels. Specialty bagels like blueberry, cinnamon raisin, multi grain, and asiago cheese bagel I do not slice and put cream cheese on because it takes away from the bagel's flavor.

As a non-jewish person, I just tear off pieces and dip them in the cream cheese container. No double dipping though.

how can you eat a bagel like a sandwich?

All the cream cheese would just squeeze out.

I go half strawberry preserves, half cream cheese anyways.

"They" often say that as soon as your resort to a Hilter reference, you've lost the argument. You, sir, proved "they" don't know what they are talking about. Well done!
