So today at work I saw a friend of mine just threw her coke can in the trash. It kind of irked me because we have a recycling bin. She said she didn't care to recycle and doubts it does anything good for the environment? I was at a loss for words.
aluminum doesn't really hurt the environment. Just saves some energy by being able to melt the can instead of make new aluminum.
Also prevents some of the need to mine for more. You may have more success in the workplace by simply asking them to recycle, especially if the recycle bins are available. Even if they don't really care, just ask them to do it for the office. That's usually better than "arguing" with someone to get them to do something.
Willfull ignorance makes it really easy to avoid responsibility. Some handy research to prove the point here. As a whole, the above rather adequately explains much of the typical american mentality.
yeah, that annoys me too. at least when it's equally as easy for someone to do either one like in your case. i'm far from an adamant environment person or recycler, and i don't go out of my way to get it done all the time. But if it requires an extra 10 steps to go to the bin that I'm gonna pass by anyway at some point, I see no logical reason to avoid it. If you're really convinced that it does no good for the environment, then you could say that your goal is to shut down the recycling program b/c it's a waste of money. But you NOT recycling a few things here or there isn't going to get that done--it would take more action on your part to go against the movement. So if that's her belief and choice, fine...but just saying "I'm not going to recycle" does nothing for her cause AND takes away from something that's at least potentially useful. (Even if the recycling program is losing money overall--not something i'm purporting--she's still making them lose even more money by not recycling while it's ongoing)
When I was younger, we got mad when people threw trash on the ground. You're mad because someone threw it in the garbage. I agree recycling is a good thing, but it wouldn't irk me to see that. Don't sweat the small stuff.
I saw some people throw a ton of Gatorade bottles in the trash at the park and I took a bag and asked them to give them to me so I could put them for recycling in the container at my home. That might be going a bit far but why wouldn't you recycle something when you can?
I have never seen the point of sorting my trash so someone else could profit. Please feel free to dig in the trash can and sort it however it pleases you.
I recycle whenever I can, but I don't think it's worth getting into an actual argument with someone over. I don't want to be that guy.
there are a LOT of people in this world, and if everyone was just like you it would be one HELL of a place.

If the recycling bin is next to the trash can, then I'll throw my can into that. If it isn't, I'll throw it in the trash or someone else can go out of their way to recycle it.
