Gooden had played for a half-dozen coaches before coming to Cleveland. Sources say some of them beat him down with their constant criticism. Those who know Gooden say he's a very sensitive person.
Silas has found the best way to deal with Gooden is to give him continual direction and encouragement.
"He took a shot (in a recent game) and looked over at the bench," Silas said. "During a timeout, he said, 'Coach, I don't know when you want me to shoot and when you don't.'
"I got the whole team together and told them, 'When you have an open shot, shoot it.' "

Gooden also can get down easily. His teammates have gotten on his case this year, and insiders say it affects him deeply. Opponents can also sense that, and they try to take advantage of it.
"He understands me more now, Silas said. "It takes time to get comfortable. He's still in the development stage. He knows what makes me happy."

Gooden is averaging 13.2 points and 9.9 rebounds and is shooting 49.8 percent from the field. He ranks 13th in the NBA in rebounding, one spot ahead of Utah's Carlos Boozer, a former Cavalier.

I wonder how serious Silas was considered as possible coach of the Rockets. Silas is indeed good for Lebron. Van Gundy would not be. It's safe to say Silas would have been good for Steve too.

In some respects, Silas is similar to Rudy T. He lets players play, and he doesn't micromanage. Hornets took a nosedive without him.

Sounds to me like Gooden needs to grow up and be a man. He's getting paid millions of dollars and can't take some constructive critisism when he's playing like shiat.

    Bogey,

A man can be sensitive to criticism too.

I think this is what is going on with Yao right now, he seems to be respond better to encouragement than criticism.

Managing egos is very important, and that is how I think JVG is failing.

Silas wasn't given serious consideration, which is a load of junk. CD was very bent towards Brown or JVG, with Dunleavey the only other real candidate.

So you mean that CD will bend over for Brown or JVG?

I prefer Popovich's approach. He has won 2 championships and Silas has none as a coach. Pop also has a diciplined military background. He knows how to handle men.

Here is the link to the quote above but the story has been moved.

Popovich coaches Tim Duncan and a bunch of solid solid role-players.

Silas is starting to have that kind of talent in Cleveland. I'm not saying coaching doesn't have an impact in the NBA...clearly it does (cough, cough....JVG), but it's no coincidence Popovich has 2 rings and Cleveland is starting to play better than they have in 10+ years...it's called talent...Phil JAckson knows a thing or two about it.

Silas didn't go to the JVG workshop for coaches. JVG would loudly use expletives to criticize the player. Silas has been criticized for not having a strong grasp on the Xs and Os as some other coaches. However, he is #1 in terms of managing today's younger NBA players. Boozer progressed very quickly under him. Lebron is going gangbusters in terms of development. Even Zydrunas is playing better after having Silas aboard. Only Ricky Davis didn't want to get along with Silas.

One cannot possibly X and O what Lebron should be doing on the court. However, Silas provides a framework in which Lebron does his thing. Just like when TMac went off against the Spurs. JVG was desperate and had no plan. He gave the green light to TMac to do whatever he wanted. Talented players don't need the Xs and Os as much as the grunts and grinders.

JVG coaching Lebron = NBA nightmare

Nike may have to go send JVG some anthrax if that happened.

it's all about people management, communication and knowing how to press a persons correct buttons to get them to respond in a positive way with their performance....... Pop methods may work cause he has players that respond to his methods, as much as he is a disciplinarian, he also he about how well he gets along with players like Parker off the court and once a player is on his good side he absolutely loves them.... obviously Rasho is one of them...... by the same token i thought it was going to far when he ripped Manu for that messed up play near the end of the TMAC miracle, i don't care if they are professional or not nobody likes being ripped in front of other people let alone a national TV audience......

people are all different coaches have to be able to motivate them all in a many of ways

Does Gooden need Silas to chew his food for him and pinch off his loaf to get him to man up on d as well?
