OK -- last time I ask everyone for feedback (promise)... We seem to be all set up and good to go. (You can register here if you haven't already). One thing we can not decide on is how to score this game. Few ways that have been proposed: 1) one point for each correct answer. Period. 2) one point for getting right pick #1, two points for pick #2, three for pick #3 -- all the way up to #13. 3) X number of points rewarded for picks #1-3 .... Y number of points for 4-7, Z number of points for 8-11, etc. An idea I have that I would like to run with is to make the Rockets pick, #9, the "money ball" -- it's worth more than any of the other 13. Ahh what the hell, it is a site dedicated to the Rocks I'm not sure I see the merit in giving points for getting "close"... Anyway, feedback welcome -- I'm releasing this soon so I'd love to hear any ideas. ------------------ NOTHING BUT .NET CLUTCHCITY.NET
I support way #2. When you say "release" do you mean like sort of circulate it for everyone? Like at nbatalk with the lottery generator? ------------------ Rockets fans wanted at hoopsboards.com Draft Chat, NBA Chat, Team Chat, and more!
Clutch, NBA.com has this type of scoring system. Maybe we can do this. Points are awarded based on the accuracy of each of your picks. If you select a player in the exact position in which he is drafted, you receive 13 points plus a bonus dependent upon the difficulty of the pick (see below). If you select a player who is drafted but not in the exact position you specified, you receive points based upon how close you came to the actual outcome. For example, if your pick is one position away -- in either direction -- from the spot in which the player is actually drafted, you receive twelve (12) points. If your pick is two positions away, you receive eleven (11) points, etc. If your No. 13 pick is actually chosen at No. 14, you receive twelve (12) points. If a player you picked is not chosen among the top 25, you receive no points for that selection. You receive bonus points each time you correctly predict the exact position in which a player is drafted. Bonus points correspond to the pick number. For example, if you correctly predict the No. 1 pick, you receive thirteen (13) points (see above) plus one (1) bonus point. If you correctly predict the No. 8 pick, you receive thirteen (13) points plus eight (8) bonus points. If you correctly predict the No. 13 pick, you recieve thirteen (13) points plus thirteen (13) bonus points, etc. Total points possible: 260 ------------------ President of the Moochie Norris FAN CLUB
Idea #2 just that getting pick 10 right gives 9 points, the 11th gives 10 points, etc and the rockets pick is worth the most with 13. ------------------ NEVER underestimate the heart of a champion!!!
Rockets pick worth 10pts Other picks worth 3pts picks outside the lottery -5 pts This punishes people for being horribly wrong. ------------------ "You've got 6 fouls, use them well" -Derrick Coleman
I contest that #2 is in reverse. It does not reward difficulty as much as luck. If you want to reward difficulty, do #1. I think it should be #2 in reverse (with the Rocket's 13 pt bonus). Really, picking the top five in correct order (and the Rocket's pick) is what we are all trying to do...no? Anyone who gets the top 5 and the rockets pick should definitely win this thing...imo. Look at it this way, people argue all the time about the NCAA pool doing heavy awards for the Final 4 and not rewarding the first 2 rounds very much (the difficult picks). But it really doesn't matter. No matter how you score it, the early rounds still matter a great deal, just like the later picks would here. Favoring difficulty by more rewards for the later picks because they are harder does not really score difficulty like we might believe. If you want to reward difficulty, just do #1. Period (as Clutch puts it). Same applies here as does the NCAA pool....if everyone gets the top 5 correct, it still comes down to the rest and the rocket's pick. But, what are we trying to do here. We ARE trying to pick the top of the draft and the rocket's pick. Reward that, or go with #1
heypartner is right on with his NCAA pool analogy. No one should be allowed to win the NCAA pool if they don't get the Final Four exactly right (top 4 teams, top 2 teams, and then the champion). The first two rounds simply separate the men from the boys. Some may think picking the top 5 is the easiest, and maybe it is, but the fact still remains the top 5 picks are the most important. Again, I agree with heypartner and believe we should do something like #2 in reverse, with the Rocket's pick getting the biggest bonus.
Since there wasn't a consensus, this is what I decided: Grading System: Forget this "close" stuff. To get points in our book you got to nail the pick. Each pick is worth 2 points, with the exception of a few picks we call "hot numbers", which are worth 5 points. The hot numbers are picks number 3, 7, 11 and 13. Then there's the Money Ball. The "Money Ball" at clutchcity.net is the Rockets pick at #9. Ahh what the hell -- they are the chosen ones. Get their selection right and you get 8 points. Sound good? ------------------ NOTHING BUT .NET CLUTCHCITY.NET
Clutch, The "money ball" pick is the first lottery pick by the Rockets. If the Rockets change their draft position, the "money ball" pick moves with them and does not stay at the #9. Correct?
