How reliable are Direct TV Sattelite dishes? (thinking of getting one)

    Hey everyone.

I desperately want NFL Sunday Ticket. Currently I have cable, and there's no way to get it. You need to get Direct TV.

My roommate, though, is worried that with Direct TV, bad weather can interrupt the sattelite reception, and that it's not worth the risk. I've been hunting around on the internet, looking for some data, but I can't find much.

Does anyone have any Direct TV experiences? Good or bad? How often does the thing get knocked out in rain? Do you worry about the signal every time it rains? (This is the scenario my roommate fears.)

Any information would be much appreciated. thanks!

I live outside of OrlanDOH! & have Direct TV/NFL Ticket. It rains here every night around 6PM. It's bullcrap! Orlando, I mean. The Direct TV goes out just as Seinfeld comes on TBS. Lasts (give or take a few) around 1/2 hour.

Don't let those commercials fool you. That s-h-i-t didn't stay on during those hurricanes last year. They did for the guy getting paid $$$ to do the commercial, but not us.

This IS the rainy season here, & I think it stays this way until around October.

Keep in mind though, that Florida is unlike any place I've ever lived. The lightning strikes down here are horrendous. Scary. I've never seen anything like it. The T-storms are like mini-monsoons.

Other than the stuff I described, Direct TV isn't all that bad ... & I can't really remember missing that many games on my NFL Sunday ticket.*

    * except that two of the hurricanes hit on Sunday's down here last year.

I wish I had it right now. My cable company declined to foot the $0.35 bill to the consumers from FSSW to show the Astros and Rockets.

So I miss 40 Astros games and Rockets games now. Damn YOU COX MEDIA!

I love my DirecTV. I have had it for 7 years and have had no bad I have ever subscribed to. The service interruptions only happen during the heavier storms, and even then it is very brief.

Gene, you may want to check how well your dish is aimed.

Mine works well, but when it does go out it's only out for about 10 mins.. when I had cable and that turned to black it would stay that way for hours some time.. It's kinda like pick your poison.. More drops with shorter time or less drops at longer times.. I think they are about even, but DirecTV does piss me off some with the bad weather thing, but nothing as bad as I thought it would be making the switch from cable..

No, it's including in the programming packages now.

I've had DirecTV for 3 years and I love it. I will never ever ever go back to cable. Ever. Every single channel is digital quality, unlike "Digital Cable" which still broadcasts many channels over an analog signal. Weather affects my reception maybe twice a year, and even then it has never lasted more than 10 minutes. NFL Sunday Ticket is awesome, I couldn't go through football season without it now. Seriously, do yourself a favor and ditch cable. I used to always talk crap about Sattelite because I was a loyal cable customer all my life. My wife finally talked me into switching and I haven't regretted it once.

Ditto for me. I mean, it went out during TS Allison, and for those couple times a year when we get a thick, thick thundercloud, the signal goes out for 10-15 minutes until the cloud passes. Otherwise, it's bueno, and I would never go to cable... though for awhile I did have the cheapest basic cable I could get, which was like $13/mo or so and just gave me an extra feed to watch a third football game at once, plus it served as a backup.

I am going with Dish Network myself as they just got the NFL Network. Also, they offer a HD Reciever for free, where Directv wanted $300 for the HD reciever. Which the crappy cable company I have doesn't support or have any plans to support. TV Max has to be the worst excuse for a cable company ever.

We've had DirecTV for about three or four years now and we love it. It does go out every once in a while when it rains hard but it doesn't stay out during the entire storm. It goes out for about 10 or 15 minutes and I can't think of a time when it really pissed me off.

If you go with DirecTV make sure you get the DirecTV DVR. It comes with a duel tuner so you can watch one program while recording another. We just got one and we wonder why we waited.

I've had Direct TV for five years, have moved several times with it, and used it in big cities as well as suburbs. Can't say enough great things about it.

As far as reception goes, I have no issues. I live in the midwest, and like clockwork, I lose reception on the first snow of the year in November/December, and the first swirling rainstorm in April/May. It makes no logistical sense, but it seems as if the dish "gets used to" the inclement weather during those outages, and I'm fine for the rest of the snow/rain season.

Again, that makes no scientific sense, but that's been the case since 2000, and I'll bet quite a bit of money that it'll happen again during the first big snow of the year in November (hopefully during a Warriors/Bobcats battle).

NFL Network is great man, you will love it. I still don't think you can get the Sunday Ticket with Dish though, DirecTV must have paid a ton to keep the monopoly on that.

I'm pretty sure the basic package has it. I have the Total Choice package w/HBO. Total choice is the cheapest package and it has foxssw.

It's channel 643. I just looked and it is included in the basic package. Sounds like you are getting screwed my man.
