I'm underweight and I'm trying to gain some pounds. I'm going to take this weight gainer thing that's sold over at one of the GNC stores, it'll give me the calories I need but there's a lot of protein along with it. I heard a lot of protein will cause stuff like osteoporosus (sp). Should it be like 1.5 grams of protein for each kilo I weigh?
DON'T take my word for it, but unless you are a vegetarian or you are doing some serious weight training, you probably don't need any extra protein in your diet. Beef, milk, beans, chicken, eggs, etc have all you need.
Here is an article that seems pretty rational about the subject. It recommends .36 grams per pound of body weight. That is about 1/2 the amount that you mention. If you weigh 140 pounds that would be 50 grams of protein per day. A 4 oz. chicken breast has 40 grams, a cup of soy milk has 7 grams, and an average serving of beans has 10 grams.... there you go, more than you need before you finish eating lunch.
Astro - skip the weight gainer. Try doing some strength training, free weights. This will add muscle. Then eat healthy food like grilled chicken/low-fat dairy products/etc to make sure that you gain muscle, not fat. I would even suggest some pastas for calories if you still aren't adding weight. That is mainly carbs as long as you don't drench it in a fatty sauce. Bench Press and squat and you will definitely put on some lbs. And eat more (healthy).
