I know everyone has different expectations and are in different situations. I just wanted to see how much people think they need to make to have a comfortable life void of luxuries.

If I were single, I think it would 50K. I remember a long time ago when I made less than that, I was always broke and it was I got my first job paying over that was when I was able to pay all my bills, credit cards, and not have to worry about money.

HUGE depedence on where you live. 50k out here (DC area) would be about 40k-ish in Austin, which might be 35-37k in Houston. Just educated-guessing on the figures, but it's hard to ask about this b/c of those differences

I understand that. Like I said, everyone is different. I just wanted to know what your expectations are.

The problem is that the more money you make, the more you tend to spend, and thus making it hard to live "comfortably". I mean if I had 10 million, I would probably be stupid enough to buy a 9 million dollar house, and spend 1 million on cars and tvs and crap to furnish it. Then I would have no money for food, bills, extra, etc. Eh this is probably a terrible example.

15k/year is comfortable for me if the home and automobile is paid off minus the property taxes.

160k a year would be nice.

    Expenses.
    1500 Mortage
    2000 Food
    2100 Car (something italian)
    2000 Insurance
    1500 Save
    ________
    9100 x 12 =109200

So...160k would be nice because of taxes and stuff.

Once I'm out of debt, I could live pretty easily off of 40k a year. This doesn't include my wife, of course. I have pretty inexpensive tastes. Give me a bar that serves cheap beer and shows the Rockets. Give me a couple CDs a month. Give me a 20k car like a Camry or Accord. Give me a simple three-bedroom one story house. Give me cable. Give me enough to take a couple small trips a year or one huge one. That's it.

you cant really put a number on it b/c everyone has different needs and spending disciplines.

as for me, i am single and am very happy with what i make, but to someone else my age it might not seem like enough. im 31 and from a spending standpoint, havent really changed all that much since i was in my 20's. i can buy nicer stuff, not have to worry about whether or not i can make rent and bills each month (living paycheck to paycheck), eat out whenever i want, go out whenever i want, ect. to me that is living comfortable.

also, for me living comfortable is being debt-free. i got out of credit card debt and got my car paid off about a year ago and it was such a relief - now i am actually able to save money, which only adds to the security/comfort factor. being in debt (credit card, car, school) is a crappy feeling - one that just seems to always be handing over you. it really felt like a huge weight was lifted when i got out of debt after like 10 years.

if you can live debt-free, in a decent house, take care of your family and not have to stress out about affording stuff then, imo you are comfortable.

i'm happy with what i make. but i'd be a lot happier if i could make 75k I guess. So I can contribute max to my 401k like I already do, but also save a lot and invest some on my own aside from those 2 things.

I guess another concern is you're also one accident away from screwing everything up. If you get stuck in the hospital you can't work and the bills start draining your savings.

You need to make six-figures in this country to live comfortably.

since i don't have a job and have to pay for health insurance, all my expenses (rent, cable, utility, car/health insurance, and credit card (which is pretty much everything else)) costs about 2100/mo, so 25k/yr. w/ health paid for that would be about 21k, meaning in grad school my stipend pretty much allowed me to break even. now i'm losing 25k/yr :). factoring in taxes and such, i guess 50k would be "comfortable," meaning i wouldn't feel bad about getting a nice tv and maybe a new car and still saving a little. but whenever i do get a job it should be above that. the problem is i'm too lazy to really want a job so i guess i'll just keep losing money.

I'm living pretty comfortably right now at $70K/year, and the new job pays $78K/year. I don't really want to find out what I "need" to live comfortably.

I do alright now, but I remember a time past.

A 700 sqft apartment next to Radio Shack and HEB, 3 squares a day, my HD, a computer to work from and a box guitar to remind me what was.

That was easy living, cheap living. And I was wonderfully happy.

But I do have an island mentality...don't need a lot of room...or stuff.

I guess to answer your question directly, comfortable equals happy and you can't price happy.

    Cable?
    Broadband?
Is and Acura TL luxury? Is an Accord with leather luxury?
    Is wine a luxury?
