I just wanted to ask how much you think yao is worth in terms of salary.

    Does he deserve the MAX?

*This is assuming he was eligible for extension RIGHT NOW.

IMO, he's worth the MAX if you factor in all the revenue he brings in for the Rockets. So we'll exclude that as well.

So, if we're assuming he's eligible now, and he brings in as much revenue as other MAX players (Marbury, Francis, Brand, Shaq, Duncan, Garnett, Webber), then how much is Yao worth based on improvement, potential, current skills, and physical abilities?

I'd say around 10M right now. The league average is 4.5M, and the average for C's I believe is around 7M. If yao is the second or third best C in the league, that basically would earn him 10M already.

    What do you guys think?

If Francis is worth the max, Yao sure is ;) Serioustly though, he will easily be worth the max when its time for an extension!

I am just afraid MAX is NOT enough to keep him in Houston if the team is not doing well in two years.

If we are not doing well in two years we probably don't want him in Houston....

Yao is not going to leave Houston if we give him the Max. I think his loyalties to Houston would be too strong. In a world of the all mighty dollar and how it rules everyone; Yao has some loyalties that might transcend that.

As long as WE want Yao in Houston, I think Yao will be here.

from pure basketball point of view, Yao's current production, 16pts and 9 boards, isn't anywhere close to worth the MAX. name me one MAX player that has produced less than or on the same level as Yao. I think Yao's worth what Cato's getting now. of course Yao's better than Cato but we all know Cato is overpaid.

I believe half of that belongs to th U.S. government. Half of what left might belong to the China Government.

Depends on if the manager believe he is a franchise player. Are there any other C other than Shaq worth the max. in nba right now?

I hate to break it to you but all Centers are over paid. There's a low supply of them but a very high demand for their play so what happiens they get paid up the ass, duhh! What have you learned in school? :p

if he only was conditioned for NBA play...

Anyone notice in the 3rd with 4:27 on the clock
he was doubled over eyeballing JVG to call a time out.

JVG didn't call it until steve pushed it passed half court.

But Yao kept looking over to JVG like if he didn't call it soon..
    he would collapse right there.

Yao's value should be measured by much more than his scoring and rebounding averages. He changes the entire approach of opposing teams by changing shots, creating double teams etc. He's only going to get better, and he WILL make the Rockets winners. Once his rookie contract expires, I believe he will get the max and it will be well deserved.

That's the effect of Yao. They have to double him and totally adjust their defense because of him. That's more than 16/9

If Yao improves at all conditioning-wise as I suspect he will over the next couple of years I am willing to give him a MAX as the center position is definitely tough to fill.

Even though he may not put up the numbers that a typical max contract player gets, I think he is extremely valuable on defense and I think he deserves a lot of credit for the Rockets D this year. Even though he might not be getting blocked shots, he is intimidating on the inside and forces more outside jumpers.

That along with 15-20pts and 10-15 rebounds a game will be worth a max to me.
