For those who no longer live in Houston.

I've lived now in Minnesota for 15 years and prior to that lived in Boston for a year and California for 7 yet I will still tell people I am from Texas in general and Houston in particular even though I have now lived for more of my life outside of Houston than I did. How many of you who live outside of Houston still identify with being from Houston?

Well, since I was born there, I think I will always identify with it regardless of where I reside.

Born and raised in Houston. Moved to Chicago for work after graduating from UT in 2007. Definitely still consider myself a Houstonian. In fact, I just recently renewed my Texas driver's license (I've never had an Illinois one).

I've lived in Las Vegas since Nov. of 1996 and still consider myself a Houstonian. It helps that most of my family still live in Houston. I usually go back every year or every other.
Since this town is made up of a large number of transplants, mostly Californians, it's easy for people to identify with their home town or state and not Las Vegas.
Unfortunately I haven't met many Houstonians or Rockets fans since I've been here. I remember seeing only one person wear a Rockets jersey (Barkley) and that was in 1998. The local paper used to run a bar guide to go see your favorite NFL team play and Houston never had a bar :( . The 2 big teams as far as bars go are Packers and Steelers.
If you're ever outside of the strip on the west side and see a guy wearing a Rockets t-shirt (I have 30) or jersey,it's probably me.
I remember reading a book about the voortrekkers and the author made a point that the deeper into South Africa they went the more determined they were to hold on to their customs and identity.

I live in Austin and haven't lived in Houston since '92. I am still a fan of all Houston sports teams. I don't have any family left in Houston but many friends that I don't get to see often enough because I rarely go down there.

I'll be staying in the downtown area June 9-12 so I'm excited to see my friends again and hopefully will get to check out an Astros game.

Its Texas pride baby!!! Ive lived in CA for 13 yrs but grew up in Houston. I will be moving to Hawaii in 6 weeks but consider myself a more of a Texan than a Houstonian. I think I associate myself more with the Rockets and Astros. Funny :)

    Born in Plano.

Lived in Houston for like 3 yrs....

Moved to Malta, back to Houston for 1 yr...then to Saudi for 15yrs...Switzerland for 2 yrs, Houston/Sugarland for 2 more...

Then 5 in College Station.....now up in east tx.

I still call Houston home, it's where we always went to every summer from Saudi. If we went to Asia, or europe we always flew back to tx for a few weeks before heading back to the middle east. My grandparents live in the town and country area.

    Long story....

5 years in Los Angeles and 5 years in Tokyo. a lot of ex pats i meet associate themselves with the last place they lived. (eg: 25 years in texas and 1 year in new york. "yo, im from new york.") i will always associate myself with austin and houston. hated texas when i was growing up but after having traveled a bit; texas aint so bad.

I've lived in CA for around 11 years and I always make sure people know I'm from Houston. That's where I was born and raised and I'm proud of that fact.

Houston is a great city. There're a lot of good reasons to be proud of coming from there. I've lived in Austin for about five years, but when I travel I always tell people I'm from Houston.

    What a city...

I was born and raised in Houston, left in 2001. I always identify myself as a Texan, although I have no desire to move back.

It doesn't matter if you are from Houston or not. Your hometown will always be your hometown. You can never forget where you were born and raised (unless you moved when you were baby and can't remember anything).

I've been in SF for 6 years now, and away from Houston for almost 10.

I still say I'm a Houstonian with pride.

But - I wonder how much it changes if you get married, settle down, buy a house, have a kid...

I was raised in Houston and finished high school here. Went to ATX for university. Moved to NYC and then Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Now living in the Eastern Caribbean islands.

When I was in Houston, I really hated it. There was a big lack of indie rock scene which is such a big part of my life. That is the main reason I moved to NYC. But now Houston is growing exponentially in that regards, with alot of touring acts coming through town.

The friendliest people I have ever met have been in Brooklyn and NYC by far. I didn't find people in Texas friendly especially if you are a stranger. In NYC generally everyone is accepted whether a friend of stranger.

Now living in the Caribbean amongst Europeans and Canadians, I can see that Americans are some of the nicest and open people in the world. Europeans, especially the French are stuck up bastards. The British are obnoxious as well. No regard for others.

But back to the original question. Even though I really identified well with the people of Brooklyn and NYC, I promptly tell everyone I am from Texas and Houston when they ask me. I actually fly a Texas flag on my car and on my boat dock over here.

So yea, I am Houstonian for life. I might not like every facet of it, but it is my original home. Although I have no desire to ever move back. But, it is like family. You have to like it.

It seems most of the liberals on the board are not from Houston or not living in houston.

I've lived in Austin for about 20 years, but I still say I "grew up" in Houston. (I wasn't born there, but moved there from central Texas at a very young age and went to school K-12 in the Houston area).
I still identify myself with the city, for sure.

I lived in NY and now LA, and have ever since I graduated college too many years ago.

I still say I'm from Texas first, and then Houston second. Since I was born and raised in Houston, I can't imagine it will ever go away. I still miss the food, and sports team there a lot. I really enjoy going back(home/houston)

Not at all, grew up around Houston, moved to the Austin area for college and stayed.

I identify myself as an Austinite, but root for Houston sports teams.
