How many years should a coach on average be given to be successful ?

    I am not talking about a certain sport , just in general how many years should a coach be given to prove himself/herself?

    only 1 year ? do you realize how many coaches would be out of jobs every year if that was the case .

    It depends on what level (high school, college, professional) and what talent he has to begin with.

    Erik Spolestra probably has 1.5 years to be successful. Doug Collins probably has 3 years to be successful.

    Put Phil Jackson at the helm of the Clippers, then put him at the helm of the Celtics... see what happens there. :eek:

    It should be 3 to no more than 5. Obviously this doesn't always happen.

    I'd say no more than 5 seasons without a playoff birth.

    Define successful.

    For example, even though the Astros did poorly record wise, many folks feel Mills was successful.

    I'd say 4 or 5, especially in college jobs so that they can have a roster full of players they recruited.

    Special exceptions of course. Frank Bush has regressed the defense to its lowest point in franchise history. In his case, 3/4 of the season is already pushing it.
