How many "next year" could we bear to earn championship?

I think everybody here could truly understand what I mean from the caption. Honestly speaking, Houston Rocekts is always my most favorite basketball team since Yao stepped into NBA in 2002. For the past couple of years, we have went through countless happiness and sadness moments together with this team. It's safe to say we all love this team very much. But sometimes I was really pissed off that we again and again delayed our championship dream until the next year to come true, even in the half of regular season. Setting this seanson for example, we have already gave up our winning chance very early when Morey decided to trade Rafer to Magic. Provided we could have a good back up center base on previously lineup, guess what would happened in the 7th playoff game vs Fakers. As long as we beat Fakers, championship's hands down!!! In this off season, unsurprisingly, I could expect DM still do some small ajustments to this team as usual. I have no idea whether our current lineup with a fat Tmac is powerful enough to win a championship. In the Ming era, how many "next year" remaining for us expecting? Whatever, Rockets is still my most favorite team, no matter Yao whether in Houston.(Sorry for my poor English)

You might want to ask a Cubs fan that question.

It could be worse, we could be Raiders fans or living in Cleveland. It took Hakeem 10 years to get a ring, so its not like Cougar/Rocket fans are strangers to optimism and waiting.

It is pretty frustrating, isn't it. Every single year we have a good enough team to at least compete for a championship when healthly.

But every year, somebody is injured. I am sick of that.

    Great thread.

It is likely until it ends, which could be next year, if anything. I think that as long as the fronting defenses continue to work so well against Yao for the other teams, the Rockets will continue to be seeking another championship since 1995. If he gets injured again next season, whether it's during the playoffs or the regular season that causes him to miss a significant stretch of games, the Rockets should just let him walk, and go in a new direction.

Any opposing head coach out there would really have to be so stupid to not employ the fronting defense on Yao IMO.

One other thing, if the Magic manage to beat the Lakers in the championship series, then their ex-GM John Weisbrod should get some of the credit for it.

I don't think fronting defense is the mainly barricade for us to win championship. But you are exactly right about Yao's injury problem. If our best player miss the rest of season again due to injury, what else could we do? Forewarned is forearmed. So it might be a wise solution to find an elite back up center for Yao in case this situation happens.

Yup. I agree its rather disheartening to watch the Rockets lose. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels like a part of me is gone for the next 5 months.

Yup, pretty frustrating, I believe most of fans here feel the same way.
Perhaps this is the reason why nobody here tirelessly mention about championship contender as before.

Unlike previous years, this year's "next year" actually doesn't seem hollow and seems actually poised to deliver on its promise. The only stinker would probably be the McGrady drama, which hopefully the offseason cures. Got past the 1st round, and took the invincible Lakers to 7 games (a feat only the Magic might top). Yao got injured again, but played nearly a full regular season PLUS 9 playoff games. Experienced a renaissance in terms of competent roleplayer play.

I guess Kain from the Legacy of Kain series sums it up besy:

"The first, bitter taste of that terrible illusion: hope. "

-I cannot agree with you less. Rafer just fits their team better. There's no doubt he'll have those streaky games, then it will be back to usual. I remember seeing him throw up one of those OMG shots- that hit the rim and over the back board, and was thinking Im happy i dont have to experience that again. Hes got talents that fits that team better, and I hope he wins it. Brooks/Lowry is the one two (offensive/defensive) punch we need when the rest of the team is back healthy

As far as the rockets, I believe we are were we want to be- Barring injuires. if we even had 1/3rd of the millions of dollars that sits injured- I believe we would still be in this thing. The question is what can we do about our injuries.
Yeah the unfirtunate curse- heartbreaking.. what could have been....

Only one winner every year, being in the mix is what is important, and then you hope things break your way.

..as many next year's as it takes. If they care, and the team's ownership and management is committed to the product, I care. And probably, no assuredly, I care even if they don't...

    Ditto on the bold.

You know, guys (generically speaking), there are quite a few teams out there that we should be glad we're NOT a fan of...whew!

    fixed

This is how it is to be a sports fan of any team in any sport.

You can't win it all every year, it just doesnt happen that way. You just keep tryin every year...get as close as you can and hope things go right for you.

you can also ask how many teams have won a title and how many teams have won 2 titles and so on.

each years there is one team that takes the title. alot factors decide the fate of the trophy. you have to have the team and luck to win a championship.

to OP's question, "next year" will popped up every year until you win a title. after winning a title, "next year" will start again.

i believe this is a more proper question to ask, are we a contender each year?
