I've been reading about alot of these trade rumors. I was just wondering, when can trades start happening. When can we expect a trade to happen. The suspense is just killing me. Also, people have posting some crazy trade rumors. What are some of the feasible trades that could happen. One other thing, just a thought, i really liked the team that we put together this year. I dont want to see this team dismantled too bad. i just think that we need a few missing pieces. I dont think we have room for any more all stars on this team.
JVG's on record for wanting a move like a trade before free agency begins (so I guess the draft, like micah said above). I'd be surprised if we bring in a star; JVG seems to be all about role players at this point.
I remember JVG saying he wanted to make a trade before the draft that would help clarify what they would be going for in the draft. So, if this is the case, look for something between the end of the Finals and the 28th.
I think Jeff has some ideas to use the trade exceptions. CD's probably working the phone with a deal in place, just waiting to pull the trigger. If a team wants to save a little money and unload an expensive piece that won't be a part of the teams future, the Rocket might be a nice trading partner.
He said 'free agency' not 'draft.' It would be uncharacteristic for JVG to allow the draft to feature so heavily in his team-building plans. I expect them to make a trade during the draft, but not because of the draft, but because of free agency.
I wonder what JVG's issue is with young players. Young guys don't have the fear of failure yet. Look at the 4th quarter play of Ben Gordon. Remember Sam's first year? Young guys are spark plugs. So, what do you think JVG sees when he looks at a rookie?
not allways the case. there have been trades before that did not involve that years pick. the trade is announced during the draft because it was agreed upon and completed but it becomes official a day or two later. i think that is what will happen with us. JVg wants to make a trade before free agency starts. that means that the trade will have ot happen by june 30th because no transactions are allowed for 15 days after that.
Go pull me the CBA text on that, please. In general they do, but that's because, gee, the draft is the main focus for general managers on draft day. Last year, Charlotte traded Pavlovic to Cleveland for a future 1st before the draft. Need I remind anyone of a certain Tracy McGrady trade that occurred before free agency.
So NIKE, I have some questions: Trades can happen after the season and before the draft concerning currently signed players and drafts--2005 or later? Players who just became FAs at the conclusion of this year--e.g., SAR, Swift, DM--can be traded (using this year's salary figure) or are they untradable until free agency and a new contract is agreed to (sign and trade)? How does potential CBA changes/lock out effect this. I assume the draft goes down on schedule regardless. Hypothetically could Spoon + #24 (this year's #1) be traded for SAR signed to a new contract? Thanks
NIKE and I are likely to disagree on this but the McGrady trade was agreed to on or before 06.30.2004 but couldn't become legal until the July Moratorium ended in mid-July. The McGrady trade also has no expiring contracts...your scenarios do. IMHO, no team can make a draft day deal for a player with an expiring contract (SAR, SS, DM).
GATER- I heartily disagree, and I'm 100% on it. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/transactions?date=20040628 Also, if it were not consummated till July, our trade exception would be larger. Recall it was for the BYC value of Francis (50%) and thus 5.48m (1/2 of the 10.96m Francis made in 03-04). Francis made 12.3 mill last year- or a TE of 6.15 mill. The trade was consummated using 2003-2004 salary figures because it was done before July 1. They did it then because there was some finessing (is that a word? lol) of figures to make it fit the way it did that would have been more complicated in July. (I made a post about it then- if we had waited for Francis' BYC to expire, which would have been at the end of the July Moratorium, we could have landed a trade exception worth around 10 mill. A bird in the hand is better than 3 in the bush, I suppose). For free agents, deals can be agreed upon starting July 1 but aren't official till the Moratorium is over. If memory serves, Jonathan Bender for Antonio Davis was agreed to on draft day but wasn't consummated till later. This deal wasn't one of those cases, though. FishBulb- There is ZERO documentation of that. Find me even a semi-interpretation of that being a rule. On draft day, teams focus on the draft - remember even with Orlando putting together a blockbuster deal, they wanted to step away to focus on the draft. Just because there weren't any trades in January doesn't mean they can't happen. Few trades happen in the in between time because the point of a trade is to fill a hole. If you can fill a hole with a free agent rather than trading talent, you're going to be better off. Doesn't mean they can't happen, but it's just a matter of logic- a player acquired in June isn't going to have any more time in training camp than a player acquired in early August, so what's the rush? Desert Scar et. al - As Larry Coon's FAQ puts it... On a semi-related note- this means a guy like Bonzi Wells can't be moved until his option is officially picked up. --[Faulty Nick Van Exel Information Removed]--. I'll drag out the CBA text if you really want to see it, but Coon puts it pretty plainly, and I recall that section being pretty straight forward.
I believe that Idiot Hockey GM was still trying to sort out all his options for T-Mac. They were talking to PHX about Marion and Amare if I recall correctly. So the deal wasn't even done on draft day yet for it to be accepted. but yeah, there is that technical stuff about when it's done by in July and stuff too lol
OK NIKE & Gater that is pretty clear on new free agents and contracts with options. In reading (http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#30) we can trade the rights to the 2005 pick after the morotorium (e.g., S&T with SAR and Spoon + #1) but the pick does not count as salary in a trade because if we actually signed the draft pick first he would be ineligible to be traded for 3 months. I supposed the trade could be agree to with a signed 2005 rookie 3 months out if we needed the salary from that player to make it work (the extra mil or so), but it doesn't give you much time to integrate the traded players. On a different note (NIKE/Gater), it seems to me a S&T with SAR/Swift/DM etc have to occur after the moratorium, which in turn be impacted by the lockout and new CBA. So this could be a major monkey wrench in trying to plan for next season and using the 2005 pick as compensation in a pre-arrganged deal. For example, we wouldn't know what the MLE will be, and SAR/Swift might have a hard time selling to their current teams they will leave for the MLE to their desired team if a trade is not facillitated. Portland and other teams with desirable FAs might be better off not doing anything until the new CBA is in place. I don't know, it seems like bad timing with the potential lock-out as recent FAs (SAR, Swift, DM, Evans, AD, Spree, Bell)) are mostly off the table giving fewer options. And because we don't have a good handle what we can achieve via free agency, it makes using the draft to help with more team needs more dicey. There seems no way to coordinate our drafting and the targeting of free agents, right? All in all, this kinda sucks, no?
John Nash the GM of the Blazers is really shopping NVE's contract, so he must not understand this. Here's what he said: "We have a unique opportunity in that one of the contracts we have, that of Nick Van Exel, is non-guaranteed. So it's possible we could couple the third pick and that contract to a team that might be looking to save some money." http://www.***********.com/nba_rumors.shtml So who's right?
That is why it doesn't happen. We can't negotiate with Portland for SAR, so when we're drafting, we don't pick based on who Portland etc. would want in a sign and trade. Draft picks, especially late 1st rounders are usually some combination of need and BPA- the odds of our BPA/need combo coinciding with another team's are slim. I feel like I'm forgetting a more recent example, but the biggest example of a player's draft rights being traded in a deal not agreed to on draft day I can recall is Francis- that was what, 6 years ago? Also note Scar - if we sign a draft pick, he can't be traded until December 15 (under current rules), not just 3 months out. That is why you hear JVG wanting to maneuver the roster before free agency, using the draft and trades. white lightning- I had said it in another thread, I was going off erroneous reports calling Nick Van Exel a team option. It's a subtle difference, but NVE has a unique contract situation. Van Exel is one of the rare cases this is possible. My point on Bonzi Wells, whose contract should be a true team option, stands.
