I realized yesterday that I've been on the internet since 1997 (if you don't count using friend's usenet and Prodigy services). Pretty incredible how important this tool has become considering that it's only been widely accessable and easily usable for about 15 years.
I used to get on the internet in late 1997 using my friends mac. back when 14.4k modems were the norm. I used to get on Westwood chat, then about 6 months later I got my own computer. 56k! w00t! blazing speeds! downloaded the diablo demo and got Prodigy internet too.
Since 1996, and the original version of this site was one of the first places I visited. Back then, websites weren't too secure. One of my favorite pastimes during that time was changing the heading name of ESPN's website to "Houston Rockets Championship Run Website" (or something to that effect).
1999 - when I got my first (technically, my only, since I still have it) computer. 56K/Ethernet modem. I used the 56K while I was still at my parents for my last year of HS, then in 2000, moved to the dorms at UT, and got addicted to hi-speed internet - haven't gone back since.
Cann't remember, 1990 maybe? Used computer to play games (chess) across the net at university computing labs, boy was that some bad interface back in the days.
Can someone tell me what this was? I remember in 8th grade (1994-95) my parents bought a computer with a 56k modem. My friend printed out like 3 pages worth of phone numbers I could connect to with my modem to play games, check the news, etc. (lets get serious, some of them were for adults!) I also remember he gave me a copy of Juno on a diskette. I'll tell you though it wasn't until getting to Jester (1999-00) that I experienced the internet. Couldn't go back to dial up again. Have had cable internet since.
for me it was 1994/95ish, I remember it was around that time cause I remember logging onto AOL and seeing Robert Horry holding the Larry O'Brian trophy on the front page. I was also one of the first people at school having the internet, I would print out cheats for Donkey Kong Country, and the hidden players in NBA Jam TE and would sell them Also would use those 10 hour AOL diskettes like hell, keep a stop watch to monitor that we didn't go over the 10 hours. funny story, back when I was in 8th grade? '95ish, when I was taking a Probability class in which my teacher asked why were we getting a second area code, 281. People blurted out the usual answer, fax machine, people having more than one like, and I said "COMPUTERS", my classmates laughed and my teacher gave me an ugly look like I was trying to be funny. Man, I bet she feels like a dumb b**** now
BEFORE the internet, I connected to bulletin boards on a 300 baud modem. Then 5600 baud, then 14,400, then 28,800 and then 56k. I first started using the "internet" long before the WWW was around, using things like Archie and Gopher and email.
straight up internet, I think since around 94 or so. I used hyperterminal back in the day to play some online fantasy game which only involved text in the early 90's.
