For me it all started in 1995.... Before then I was a die hard Blazers fan,all for one reason and one reason only. Clyde Drexler. He was simply amazing He is my favorite player of all time. When I heard the news that he was going to be traded to Houston for Otis Thorpe, I was ecstatic? SPelling .. because He was going to team up with Hakeem Olajuwon! I used to hate the Houston Rockets so much because they would always dominate the Blazers.... I remember Rod strickland had an open layup came in for a lay-up and Hakeem capped the living SHiznit out of him and then Drexler got it back and Went up against olajuwon and got rejected as well! ahhhh I hated Hakeem so much. After Drexler was traded I automatically became a Rockets fan... Call it bandwagon jumping or front runner or whatever but wherever Drexler went I went along with him. One of the most memorible moments for me was when Rockets won the Championship in 95... seeing Drexler and Hakeem get the ring together was fantastic. Till this Day... I know I know its only been 5 years but still all because of Drexler now I love the Rockets.. He made me grow to love Olajuwon... respect Elie.... like Cassell... Hell I even like BUllard. And who could forget FRancis! My fav player in the league right now because he's on the ROCKETS! I'd like to hear your guy's stories too on how long uve been a Rockets fan and how u came about them. ------------------
Since 1972 when my family moved to Houston. Also, Oilers/Titans (whom I still support)and Astros. I remember charting the scores and listening to Gene Peterson on the radio. I still remember the call of charging on John Lucas in '76 I think in the Eastern confernce finals. DaDakota - Rocket for life. ------------------
BobFin, Gene Peterson was going nuts, he was screaming...HE WAS MOVING, HE WAS NOT SET... Ah...Kevin Kunert, Rudy T, Calvin..... DaDakota ------------------
1984-85 season. Hakeems first year. I was living in Florida at that time but moved to houston in 87. I love that rockets team. Hakeem, Ralph , Rodney Mccray, Lewis Lloyd and John Lucas. Those guys were great to watch. ROCKETS FAN 4 EVER. ------------------ President of the Moochie Norris FAN CLUB
I have never heard of the Rockets. I just like to post on this BBS. I actually have never been to the Clutch City homepage, I just come straight here. If I were to go to the informatiion pages, I could very easily get confused and dizzy because I do not know anything about the Rockets or basketball. Sometimes I pretend like I follow the Rockets, that I watch the games, but I really am just reading and writing poetry about gun-running and amputating legs. I might start to watch the Rockets if they ever win a championship. Or if they let Eric Meeks play for them. People who "know" about basketball tell me he is good. Thank you, Asian Sensation, for giving me a forum to make this confession. ------------------ rimbaud post-a-thon 2000 [This message has been edited by rimbaud (edited June 22, 2000).]
My whole life I have been a Rockets fan and Barkley fan. Bark came first though, so during the Suns/Rockets playoffs it tough. Nonetheless like Bark I wish he could of played his entire career in Houston. ------------------ I AM SPARTACUS
92-93 season is my first memory but I've been a fan since like 90-91. I was like 9 or 10 in 92 and before then I didn't even know about the Rockets and I watched Michael and the Bulls for a very short time period in like 88-89 or something when I was a little tot. My aunt told me we had a team called the Houston Rockets and I was hooked. What got me hooked was the 93 playoffs. My first memory of being a Rocket fan was listening to Gene Peterson call the Clippers series and then I remember seeing them win Game 5. Then I remember Game 7 of the Seattle series like it was yesterday. I remember being really pissed when they called goal tending on Dream late in the fourth and thinking it cost us the championship because we lost by 1 101-100 I believe. I think I might still be a Bulls fan had I not been so adament that the refs screwed us in 93 because it got me really fired up thinking that we were gonna win it in 94. And can you imagine watching game 7 Seven of the 94 Finals in New York? Well I did. On a family vacation to all over Tennesse, Ohio, Kentucky, and a bunch of other states that ended in Cooperstown, New York and we watched the Game 7 and went nuts in a Jamestown, New York hotel room when the Rockets won it all. We then called long distance all the way back to Houston calling all our family and we were like wassup, the Rockets did it and Dream carried em. It is one of my best memories not only as a Rocket fan, but as a person because I felt so proud to be a Houstonian and watching Houston fans set the standard ------------------
Thank you Rimbaud for confirming what many of us already suspected. DaDakota "What are you waiting for, go buy Starlancer, at least download the free demo" ------------------
lol rimmy! I wanna hear some of that poetry. I'm calling you out! ------------------ No signature for you!
Asian, You registered in '99 and this is only your 6th post...man talk about lurking...sheesh.... DaDakota ------------------
right after the 93 season. they lost on a last second 3 point attempt by dream to the sonics. i was rooting for em. i always liked hakeem because he was a muslim, like me. that led me to become a fan of theres and what ya know...they win the title the next two years and im being called a bandwagon jumper by every friend i have. ah well, at least i never jumped on the bulls bandwagon, like everyone else did... ------------------ Know you role...Cuttino! Pass the damn rock to Stevie, fool.
I've been a fan of the Rockets since the 1993 season, but my favorite memory of the Rockets will always be that first championship in 1994. I was camping with my next door neighbors at Garner State Park, just west of San Antonio. The night of game 7, we weren't anywhere near a TV, but we heard someone yell, "THE ROCKETS WON! THE ROCKETS WON!" The entire park went nuts! It was great because we were nowhere near Houston, but everyone there was a Rockets fan. It was like a giant outdoor party. ------------------
Although I will never admit this again, I was actually a Jazz fan in the early 90s. But slowly I started realizing the way that they play is bad for basketball, not to mention boring as hell. I started watching more and more Houston games, and I loved the three-pointers and uptempo style. Dream was unstoppable, and one day, it just clicked. I don't know how I ever lived as a Jazz fan. Luckily, those days are over. But I have been to the dark side. It is not a pretty sight. ------------------ Jazzkiller
The first game I ever saw the Rocks play was in 87 against the Jazz. Of course, they lost that game. I really started becoming a hardcore fan during the 87-88 season. Haven't been able to kick the addiction since then. Before then, my only notion of the Rockets was that they were the 2nd best team on the planet next to the Harlem Globetrotters. I guess I confused the Celtics and the Globetrotters somehow. But oh well, I am a much more educated fan now. ------------------
Ever since my days in Plano, 83. (anti-mav) ------------------ We would like to get rookie Francis on the break for some easy scoops in the first quarter...
Ive lived in Houston almost all of my twenty years and can remember watching a Celtics/Rockets game after going swimming during the summer of 86---which I now know was the FINALS. I have been a Houston sports fan all my life. I remember when Rudy took over for Don Chaney, and I remember the heartbreaking loss to the Sonics in 93 in overtime. But then things started to turn around. I was actually at that game where Hakeem came out of nowhere to block Strickland. Then in '94 I got to go to nearly every playoff game, especially the big ones. Game 7 against Phoenix (great game, I remember at the end Barkley was kinda mad he was losign and gave HAkeem a hard pushing foul that was uneccessary at the end of the game---anyone else remember that??). Then the Finals came and I got to go to both game 6 and 7 at home. IT WAS FANTASTIC. The Rockets are my team and I am glad to see a quick rebuilding process. HAving watched this year and the travails of PHil Jackass makes me so much prouder of the Rockets and Rudy for sticking with his cub for over 30 years (its called loyalty, which comes ahead of winning, something Phil Jackass would never understand). The Rockets will rise to the top again. ------------------ When I die I want to go peacefully like my grandfather. Not screaming like the passengers in the back seat!
Perfect ... a way for me to prove I'm a longtime fan even though I have less than 30 posts by my name! I've been a Rockets fan since 1981. My family moved from San Antonio to Houston in 1980 and I was a huge (well, as big as you can be when you're 9 years old) George Gervin fan, but after watching a Moses Malone-led blue collar Rockets team take the Celtics to 6 games in 1981, I became a Rockets fan for good. (It was actually an incredible introduction to big-time sports after coming from a city with just one pro team. We were just in time for Luv Ya Blue and the second loss to the Steelers, and we made it to Houston for the 'Stros legendary run in 1980. I still remember HISD letting us out of school early to catch the one-game playoff against the Dodgers that year.) I would also add that I've only lived in Texas for one year since graduating high school in 1989 but have never wavered from all 3 teams (until the Oilers moved). Guess the excitement of pro sports in Houston in 1980 and 1981 hit me at an impressionable age ... ------------------ [This message has been edited by wrath_of_khan (edited June 22, 2000).]
I have been a fan since I learned how to play basketball properly in 1990. I just liked Hakeem heaps but also just like Dean I was more of a Barkley fan. God he was explosive back then. I can remember one game he played against the bullets their center at the time was on the fast break gaurded by Rick Mahorn and Charles jumped up off balance behind Rick as the center on the bullets shot and charles blocked it. Man that was big! ------------------ I'm tha hip hop attracta, rapper slash acta, right back at cha!
