So I did my taxes a few weeks ago and promptly sent them off so I won't be like those other people who wait till the last minute, cool!
Well, yesterday I get a returned letter from the HISD Tax people and my freakin tax return was in it!!!
AAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!! I had that letter with all the rest of my tax stuff and just assumed that was the envelope to the IRS and sent everything in that envelope!

    NOW I'm freakin' late!

What the hell do I do?!:(

I'm only taking a wild guess, but just like the rest of us, they are really busy and probably don't check the dates on most submissions. I could be totally wrong tho. But I'm hedging they just want you to file and put the pressure on us all when their really isn't that much pressure at all. So I bet if you mail it in today there won't be a fine. They have so much work to do I doubt they catch the dates on most applications and just process them.

Just mail it....what's the penalty for being a day or two late?

maybe send a letter explaining why and send the cancelled envelope with it. (make copies for yourself)

or check http://www.irs.gov find out what they say... or call the local tax office, they can help.

Like they said, just mail it in. Even if they notice it's late, you'll just get charged a couple of days interest & maybe a small penalty, shouldn't be too much though.

I have a friend at the IRS. I did something similar a number of years ago. He told me to put it either registered mail (or overnight if you are feeling worried) and include a short letter explaining what happened. Most of the time, they won't penalize you anything, particularly given it is less than a week late.

    Good luck! :)

    yeah...what he said!!

if it makes you feel better, you might give the IRS a call and tell them about it too.
