We're finally getting a dog and our last fence was getting old, rotting away, and infested with some carpenter bees. We need a fence that can keep the dog in the backyard, all the other parts of the yard have fences.

How hard is it to build a fence these days? I'm trying to do this with a friend and get another skill under the belt. I've done the measurements a little rough so far, but it's looking like about 23-24 feet of fence from our garage apartment to our backdoor.

    Photos attached.

Seems like a lot of thought has to go through building one's fence.
It's amazing what results google turned up...

Also, although I don't own a home myself, I know that you should check your home owners association for fence regulation. I know those associations are asses and get carried away with what kind of rules they have. My parents had the smallest dent in their garage door and they were going to sue us $200 for not fixing it. So I would check with them to see if u can even build a fence in the first place.

Are you going back with a wood fence? If not look up http://www.sss-steel.com/ They can set you up with all you'll need for a steel fence and gate.

I just spent all day Saturday putting about 30 feet of fence up. It's not that hard, just time consuming. Just make sure everything is level. If you can re-use the fence posts it will be much easier. You can also order 8-ft pre-manufactured lengths of fence from Home Depot or Lowes which will decrease your build time significantly. You can also buy the fence door pre-manufactured.

If you're going to build it from scratch, watch the ads for discounted fence boards. I bought everything I thought I needed about six months ago for about $.79 a board and had it stored. Some of it ended up being cracked or too warped to use and I had to go buy about 20 boards to finish the job at 1.69 a pop. Also make sure you're very particular about the boards you buy- take each out individually and make sure it's straight without any cracks. It may take longer for you to get your lumber but you won't fall into the trap I did.

It's pretty rewarding once you're done, and after you get into a groove it goes fairly fast.

    Good luck!

If it's a Jack Russell Terrier you might as well get some fun out of it and build goalposts and punt that son of a b****.

Definitely harder than in past days, but easier than future days.

buy a wrought iron fence... one of those like 4 foot high ones. their easy to install. just 4 concrete bolts in each post and bolt in the wall.
