By reputation no one works harder. He came to the NBA with a complete set of Offensive Tools. He understands the defense and knows what it takes to to be successful in the NBA. His english is now good enough to where communication is not an issue. Wouldn't Yao be the ideal coach, teacher, mentor... for someone like Jordan Hill? Or how about Daniel Orton or Hassan Whiteside? You want to know how to play defense in the post or add a drop step and a Shanghi Shake to your offense then who better to teach you than Yao? You need to practice on your footwork and balance? Who better than Yao? My reason for asking this is the up coming draft. The Rockets are in a position to take a big with a lot of potential who might not be all that refined yet. Hassan Whiteside is the perfect example IMO. He is probably not going to come into the league setting the world on fire because he is so raw. However, he might have the motor and athleticism to develop into an NBA superstar.
As a coach, Terrible he would try to never trade anyone, he is too loyal. But as a TUTOR, he would be outstanding. DD
Yao as HC, Deke as Defensive Assistant, Scola as Flopping Coach. Only bad part is that no one would be able to understand what they're saying.
Don't think he'd do a good job to be honest. Doesn't look like the master of communication, and usually the vocal leaders of teams (Battier, etc) turn out to be outstanding coaches.
When I read the title, I thought he was refering to "head coach". After reading his post, I realized he meant tutor. I agree with your TUTOR statement, but some what disagree with your coach take. Granted few tier 1 players become tier 1 coaches, but I don't think Yao would be terrible. He'd at least be better than Danny Ainge & Isaiah Thomas.
I can see him getting frustrated with players who don't have the work ethic he does. So, I don't see him running a team. A big man coach, he could definitely be good at.
Yao does own one basketball team in China now. He will be a great boss and a great tutor. But I do doubt his coaching ability.
ignorant statement. we already have definitive proof how he would perform in that regard. he owns a team in China. he's changed management, brought in a new coach, brought in new players and weathered a wide-scale salary conflict among his players without buckling. all the while taking a bottom team to a strong playoff run. don't even know where to start with that statement about yao being too "loyal." as a teammate his job is to be loyal to his teammates. as a coach or an owner his job would be to look out for the general welfare of his team including discipline, trades and other hard decisions the main difficulty in using Yao as a teacher isn't all that crap but the fact that not many, if any big men in the NBA can match his skillset. there isn't anyone in the draft who can match his size or strength. and not many centers have the soft touch to be able to hit a 20 foot turnaround as consistently as Yao either. every big man coming into the NBA has a ton to learn about footwork and Yao could be of some use but it's not like he's the fleetest guy in the league. a dude like Jordan Hill could probably learn more from Scola in terms of footwork and positioning than from Yao since their strengths are so different
