i'm moving from my apartment in august (290/highway 6), and looking to move much much closer in. rent wise i'm looking to spend 500ish, and as always the less the better.

so i'm looking online, and see a ton of apartments in the westpark/59 area that are really really cheap... like 350/mo cheap. though bellaire/west university/medical center would be my preferred location, i can't see paying that much to live not that much farther from there.

a few friends have suggested garage apartments in the rice/river oaks area.

Probably not the ideal place to raise a family, but if you know how to handle a little sketchiness and don't mind taking your chances on replacing car window glass you should be fine.

I remember going to see "Menace to Society" when it first came out
for some stupid reason we decided to watch it at Sharpstown.

I remember when the store clerks got killed, the whole audience started laughing. plus everyone's pagers went off in the theater.

You'd be safer in any one of the wards. Go with the garage apartment.

I bought a car at Gillman Sharpstown, I think that place doesn't exist anymore.

Hey remember they had a Federated electronics store there back in the day.

    How Catholic is the Pope?

Yeah, I'd probably steer clear of living in an apartment in Sharpstown...

I don't live too far away, and I can assure you that you want NOTHING to do with that area, ESPECIALLY any of those sub-500/month rent places. It's pretty terrible. General rule of thumb - stay at least 3-4 miles away from the stretch of 59 between the Chimmney Rock and Bellfort exits. 3-4 miles away, either direction from the freeway.

Garage apartment - all the way. You can find them for $5-600 and not have to worry about getting jacked constantly.

Man, I grew up in Sharpstown so it's sad to see stuff like this. I haven't really been there since '92 so I can't imagine how bad it is now.

I'm not convinced it's as bad as some think. I had a buddy who lived out that way just three years ago and he stayed bullet-free.

That said, Montrose has some VERY liveable garage-type joints for that kind of rent.

I was born and raised in Sharpstown, moved out in 2004. I'm surprised at the ignorance displayed here by the posters. Sure the area is not the best, but if everyone took the time to understand the people instead of assuming everyone is out to mug you, then the world would be a better place. It is not as bad as everyone wants you to believe.

Hate to break it to ya, but Westpark/59 ain't Sharpstown. Sharpstown itself isn't that bad, but the mall has really gotten ghetto-fied. I remember when Westwood mall was open way back when I was 10. I think the part you are fearing is more so what you see when you go on Bellaire east of 59, like around Renwick. That isn't ghetto as much as it is pure barrio. Actually to me that's the most culturally definitive part of Houston, I like that part almost as much as Chinatown and much better than the plastic cellophane suburbs with streets that wind around pointlessly so "robbers" will get lost. Right. Think about the CHILDREN.

But then again I lived in Alief so your standards may be higher. And next year I'll be in a decent $1450/mo double right off of Hermann Park next year so I may be a hypocrite too.

I moved from Sharpstown to Alief. I actually wish I still lived in Sharpstown because it was easier to get to 59 to go to school.
