I've got DSL and am capped at 784. I usually surf at about 630Kbps. I wouldn't call DSL outdated. It's just a different type of service. Cable modem service is a shared line. You may have super fast speeds but as more people log in and use the same line (in your neighborhood) congestion occurs and your speeds may drop. DSL is a dedicated line. One line, one user. But the drawback is, the further away you are from the switching hub, the slower your speeds. happy surfin' rH ------------------ visit: groovehouse.org
Does anyone know of a good site to test your speed? I just got a cable modem but have no idea how quick it's running. It sure beats dial up though! ------------------ First the Sopranos and now Eddie Griffin... thank you New Jersey!

DSL isn't out-dated, it's just comparitively more expensive. I still think from talking to others (and my own experience) that it's more reliable. I had DSL for about 3 years until last month when I moved and decided to try out cable modem service. My DSL service was more reliable than my cable modem service has been. I originally had 768k/768k DSL service but downgraded to 768k/128k service from Verizon/DirectLink. My current cable modem speeds blow my DSL speeds out of the water. My speeds range anywhere from 1 Mbit/sec to 5Mbit/sec on most days. At least that's what these speed tests keep telling me, but then most of those things aren't accurate to begin with, but I like the numbers, so I quote them anyway. I just ran a test and got over 3 Mbit/sec. ------------------ This space awaiting something witty to be said in a long, slow off-season...
My cable modem has at least one outage a day that lasts at least 15 minutes (each). It's not reliable at all. Plus, I don't get speeds any faster than DSL. The cable people told me that it's because the cable inside my apartment is too old to carry the signal at the high rate. You'd think that replacing the internal cable would be cheaper than sending a tech guy out here every couple of days, but what'd I know, I don't run the cable company. The only upside is that I end up getting my Internet service at a severely discounted price because they knock money off the cost everytime I complain about the service being down. And it's down everyday at least for a little while. I liked DSL better. It was more reliable, and it was speedier in my case. The only problem was that it took a month to get it activated and there was a one-year contract required. I have a friend that lives in McKinney, and he's had far better luck with his cable modem service, so my experience is not universal. For many, cable may well be the better choice. ------------------ Why not visit MovieForums.com
Just tested my cable modem at DSL Reports... 854kbps download and 321kbps upload. Pretty fast. My cable modem is WAY more reliable than my DSL ever was. ------------------ How the hell should I know why God would allow the Holocaust. DOD, You keep saying DSL is more expensive. How much were you paying and how much are you paying for cable now? For my Bellsouth connection, including phone service, would cost me $100, but because I have both, it only cost me $80. My DSL cost 40 (which i got free for 6 months) and my phone cost $40 (comes with every bell and whistle offered, per DSL deal). I believe I have 1.4K DL (which I have hit)and 750K (only hit appx 350K). I need to do a test and see what I can get. Besides, speeds are over rated. How often do you visit a site that really can handle anything over 100K? ------------------ "Bada Bing!"
I had DSL through DirectLink (ISP) and Verizon (CLEC). It was 768k/128k service; I did this so I could get 2 static IP's. The combined service was about $70 from what I remember. I now have cable modem service through @Home. My monthly bill is around $35/month. I regularly get 1.5 - 6 times the speed of my old DSL line. My upload speed is capped at 128k. What the phone companies don't tell you is that they can throttle your supposed 1.5 Mbit connection (like SW Bell has) down to around 384k (I can't remember the exact number). That's all they "guarantee". And believe me, there are definitely some people out there that are getting throttled. Maybe for you they're overrated, but for me they're not. Cases in point : 1) I had to download 3 or 4 Linux distributions. I was downloading about 5 or 6 files that were each about 500-600 megabytes. 2) I regularly transfer files and databases from work to my home computer (every other day or so). That is about 10-80 megs regularly. 3) Some people like p*rn. 'Nuf said. 4) Some people love downloading multimedia files such as .avi's, ripped movies, mp3's, etc. at a rate of gigs/month. The speed doesn't necessarily come into play in visiting a site, the speed comes into play when transferring large files. ------------------ This space awaiting something witty to be said in a long, slow off-season...

I have dsl 784/384 but I usually test at about 680/220 I got in on a special when it first came to town and I only pay 39 a month. It usually stays connected anywhere from 2 days to a week without having to resync. I never had cable so I just know it's a hell of a lot better then my 56k was. ------------------
My cable is $30 per month with my digital cable subscription. ------------------ How the hell should I know why God would allow the Holocaust. I don't even know how the electric can opener works. - from Hannah and Her Sisters
I used to and still do occasionally download movies, mp3's ect ... but most servers are cable/DSL distributors, while sharing multiconnections. Maybe Usenet can offer those speeds (I don't use it), and college connections, but even the most foolish do not distribute with their college connections (unless they are not aware of File-Sharing programs) But I definately see where you do use it. ------------------ "Bada Bing!"
Hi everyone! I was wondering about your internet connection over there! How fast is it? Is it true that DSL is already out-dated? I installed DSL (796kb/s) yesterday, but it´s not widely spread. In fact, our two main providers (AOL and T-Online) just got started with their beta test... Oh well... ------------------ What do you expect from someone who beats up his fiancee?
I have DSL thru earthlink at 39 bucks a month. When I first got a couple of years ago it wasn't very reliable but it has been screaming now for about a year and a half. Downloads are superfast. I have never had cable so its hard to compare but... ...I go to several different file sharing sights (Napster, LimeWire, Morpheus) and the Cable hook ups almost always upload to me faster than DSL hook ups. But I have to say I love my DSL. ------------------ [This message has been edited by crash5179 (edited July 06, 2001).]
