I have a coworker that likes em soft and brown (with spots) I like mine yellow, with no green and not crunchy.
Nothing better than a banana ice cream milkshake w/ sprinkled nutmeg on top. But lemme ask you HEAD, what exactly prompted you to just up and start a thread on bananas anyways?? What was it, HEAD??
RH, You know damn good and well that you are asking for (maybe not but will get) smart ass responses. I buy them with a little green but that is b/c I will not consume them at a rate fast enough that they will not rot if I buy them ripe. I assumed you meant how we like them when we consume so I voted ripe.
I prefer to eat them when they still have the slightest bit of green on them. Once they get pure yellow, they're great in smoothies. If they make it to brown, I just mush them up and make a loaf of banana bread. Mmmmmmm ... bananas....
deep fry them bad boys in some funnel cake batter, then top them in caramel...Sure, it completely destroys any nutritional value that the banana had, but you can't beat the taste...
I love them when they have a hint of green near the top. Pure heaven. When the green disappears, I can no longer stomach them. My mom does exactly as Mrs. JB. When they get mushy, she bakes Banana bread. Since I didn't eat any of the bananas she bought when I visted over the holidays, she sent me back to Austin with about 10 loaves of it.
Bananas are best when they have a few brown spots on the peel (just the peel -- not the actual fruit). As a banana ripens, the starch within the fruit is converted into sugar. So, the ideal tasting banana would be one which has been sitting just long enough to develop spots on the peel, but not long enough to get brown, rotten segments on the fruit.
it was my co-worker... we had a banana discussion and i thought i would ask my friends here... just curious. while i agree with the brown spots turning the starch into sugar... i can't touch a banana once it gets spotty. when they do get spotty and over-ripe, banana bread is the best way to go...
If people liked bananas green or brown, then why would the color yellow be associated with bananas? I like yellow, no other colors. Although I'd rather have a little green than a little brown on the peel.
OK, I'm the one who likes them green. Normally by the time you get them, or get around to eating them, they're more yellow with green at the top. Once they're all yellow, they get mushy and sickly sweet. The texture of them makes me sick. Maybe OK for smoothies, but once any significant brown spots show up, time to throw it away.
Am I the only person here who doesn't eat them at all, or did the other anti-banana people just abstain from the thread and poll since there was no option for not eating them at all.
Fine, fine FINE. I'll go ahead and start it off... -------------------------------------------------------------- There should be a poll option for "With a lot of KY or Astroglide." -------------------------------------------------------------- A-Train alluded to it first though, so I can't take full responsibility for this bannana (thread) "going down" the wrong "track".
I'm with you, VDP. It's the texture that turns me off. Banana bread, banana smoothies, or just banana flavoring is fine, but not bananas.
Bananas are one of the most nutritious foods you can eat. They're chock full of essential vitamins and nutrients.
