I am sure you all know what I am talking about and have been in a situation like it before. I don't mean being flat out mean but actually trying to help somebody fix their situation. It can be about anything, financial situation, hygiene, parenting, driving, living situation, whatever. How do you do it? Do you treat it differently if it is a family member, friend, co-worker, authority figure, stranger, new acquaintance, etc.? I'm just wondering because I never know exactly how to approach a situation like it.

Well, for maximum success, you should do it through a bit of diplomacy first. Let's say, for instance, somebody stinks. Might wanna start out taking the guy gently aside and say " hey, dude, you're a great guy and all, but people think you have a B.O. problem. I'm just telling you this personally, not trying to embarass you or anything, just wanted you to know it's what people are talking about. "

The last thing you want to do ( unless they've been really stubborn about it ) is to mock them in front of a public venue and embarass them. That usually gets people on the defensive and their pride will be more important to them than to change.

I personally disagree. I think openly mocking and ridiculing them about the circumstance in front of a large group, preferrably with many members of the opposite sex is probably the most effective measure to ensure that you actually get the point across and they actually take action.

I find it a bit easier to tell someone about their negatives when Im drunk. Loosens things up a bit.

I try to take the positive approach, like "dude you would be so much happier if you just stopped obsessing over that b****." Something to that affect.

Or try to make a joke out of their negativities.....

It varies from situation to situation, relationship to relationship. Depends on how big or serious the issue is and how blunt you can be with the person. I prefer the blunt "straight to the point" approach but in the real world, most people don't like that. The funny thing is, most people will SAY they like the direct approach when they really don't. Both men and women. I guess folks are hesitant to admit their feelings get hurt easily. My advice is err on the side of caution because I've seen people hold longtime grudges when their own "flaws" are pointed out to them even in a constructive way (in private or in front of others).

Start a rumor about the person through online BBS and hope the rumor goes back to the person one day.

Of course. Depends how close you are to the person, then the individual themselves - male/female/age, how much you like them/hate them, if they like you/hate you. If its at work/home, gym....

The closer you are to the person, the more direct and honest you can be about it (well, you'd think...). Don't smear the issue. Let em know its what YOU think and how YOU see it, and not the "everyone out there is saying" kinda thing. So it doesnt appear like its common knowledge to everyone. Also it makes it like you're not talking about them behind their back, and its a protected issue. Basically you gotta come across as a sincere, honest and trusty person and not some kind of meddler (duh thats why you're asking)

Also when you bring up issues about someone, you're opening it up for them to do the same with you. So don't go in thinking then or later down the line you won't hear anything about you

depends on the person. if he/she is hypersensitive about criticism, maybe its best to go about gently and in private.

Aren't there sites that do this? Where you can tell someone something anonymously that they have demonic Godzilla breath or something?
