From my brother, I borrowed a PC and, separately, a 56K modem. The PC has a network card and no modem, but he thought it should be no problem to install a modem. However, the computer couldn't find the modem. I tried a different modem which it also couldn't find. I'm starting to discover that this procedure isn't as straight forward as I thought it would be. Could someone please tell me what I'm not doing that I need to do? ------------------ Rockets Draft Obligations Summary http://www.gaffordstudios.cjb.net/
What kind of computer? How old is it? What version of Windows are you running (Older versions may not have plug-n-play)? The ports in the computer are not all the same. You may be trying to install it in an invalid port. Did you try replacing the network card with the modem? Is the modem new? Are you sure it works? You may have to download the drivers for the modem (to a disk on another computer ) Also, some newer modems aren't compatible with older machines. Many of the newer ones are software driven (which is why the cost has dropped). They may require Windows 95/98, and even then an older computer may not be able to keep up with the modem and the system software. I have a 75mhz Packard Bell that I tried three different 56K modems in -- none of which worked. ------------------ Stay Cool...
Cool. If your friend can fix it, that's great. I've installed lots of printers, memory, a CDRW player, network cards, and managed to get a broken floppy drive working, but that modem thing was a major pain. I was running Windows 95 with plug-in-play on the computer, and had modems with acceptable system requirements, fixed the IRQ problem, talked to some people that refurbished computers, and the stupid modems still wouldn't work right. (The 14.4 modem that came with it ran faster.) The newer modems seem to just have problems working on older computers. This may be a silly question, but did you go through the add new hardware control panel? Did you also try the modems control panel? (It will let you "add new modem." You may have to let it "find" it through one of those controls, or for some reason the computer might not be detecting it or recongnize it as a modem. ------------------ Stay Cool...
Yes people still use win95. As Astro said, the newer versions are annoying. Microsoft wants to treat me like an idiot. And even though I can't figure out how to install a modem, I can work a damn computer without their stupid paper-clips and whatnot. DC, I have tried everything you've suggested to no avail. Don't sweat it; Monday I'll post again that it's all working fine.... actually, I'll probably forget. ------------------ Rockets Draft Obligations Summary http://www.gaffordstudios.cjb.net/
Guys, I was just kidding...geez! Actually Windows 95 can fly on a system from today...so I'm told. I use Win 98. ------------------ Too often, we lose sight of life's simple pleasures. Thanks for the word of encouragement, TraJ. DC Sports, The computer is 2-3 years old, running Windows 95, can plug-and-play. I tried the modem in every port that would take it, including the one that had previously housed the network card. I don't know how old the modem is, but it is a 56K so it can't be more than a couple years old (or brand-spanking new). In any case, I think I managed to cajole a friend into fixing it for me this weekend. He said it may be some sort of IRQ problem (I'm like, IRQ, huh? That's fascinating! Now come over here and fix it). So thanks for the help, but hopefully I won't have to learn anything about computers afterall. Nothing really wrong with Win95. In fact Win98 isn't much different, and some of the ways it is different annoy me. Only reason I use 98 is that I figured new programs (read: games) would eventually no longer be compatible with the older OS. Did the modem come with any software? Have you tried to select the drivers manually from the "install new hardware" list? ------------------
