I don't care if I have on a pink suit, the tallest person in the room, playing the piano with a top hat on I'm usually identified as the black guy. I am in Little Rock this week and was doing some grocery shopping at a store near the club. This guy walks up to me and says, "Hey you were the black guy at the comedy club last night, right?" I say, "And oh yeah you were the white guy in the audience....right?" He said that he meant nothing by it but it just reminded me of how people actually see you. People so often claim that race isn't an issue but always reference what you are before they reference who you are. It reminded me of the line from the movie A Time to Kill where Samuel L. Jackson says to Matthew McConaughey, " You don't see me as a man you see me as a black man". How guilty are we?
When I'm at the gym, I identify people by their shoes. If I see that same person in the grocery store, I say, "Hey you are the guy with them Reebok Pumps!" But seriously, I generally identify people by their shoes.
You must work at Fleet Feet. Every time I go in there they decide how serious I am by looking at my shoes. I see women as either ugly or fiiiiiiine. I see men as stupid or stupid.
So, out of all the comics working at the club, how many were black? If you were the only one and he said , "you were the black dude" isn't that just a singular designation. I mean your blackness is the most distintictive descriptor. Since blacks are a minority in most social situations in the US refering to the the 'black' dude, narrows down the designation quicker than most anything else because it is so readily identifiable more so than brown haired or skinny. I would also hazard a guess that you were using the cultural contrasts between blacks and white in your act (cause it's always funny). If you did then you probably identified yourself as a "black dude'
I pretty much go with the most obvious physical attribute, i.e. skin color, nationality, size (fat guy, tall guy, whatever), if they wear glasses, or have hair that's identifiable. Of course that's for people I don't know well. Once I get to know somebody, I'll give them a deeper, more meaningful identifier based on their personality. So instead of referring to them as, "That black dude" I'll go with "That black dude I know. You know, the funny one." "We all self conscious, I'm just the first to admit it"
I was the tallest, I was the closer and I played the piano. It doesn't really bother me but I just wonder if my ass was on fire would the first descriptor be the black guy.
if you had a jamaican accent i would say.. hey werent you the jamaican guy at the comedy club? instead of the black guy maybe you should perform with a fake accent and then see how people describe you...
I'll identify African-Americans by their color just as much as I do white people. I'll say "that white guy, with the hat, goofy socks" just as much as I do "black guy, with the socks, goofy hat." We should be proud of who we are and appreciative of where we've come from, and I see nothing wrong in identifying people by their looks.
"Hey, do you remember that *******?" If I don't know people too well, I identify them by how they act.
1. male or female 2. if they are attractive or not being honest i guess. think with the schlong, heart, then brain.
Kind of like m_cable, I'll use any reasonable descriptor that comes to mind when I'm among friends or family to describe someone. I consider race to be reasonable. If I ran into you after a show though and wanted to know if you were one of the comics, I would clean up the question a little and ask you if you were one of the comics and not distinguish you by any of your physical characteristics but by one of your actions or jokes from the club.
This guy from clutchfans (and i have no idea who it is) but that person sent me a text regarding the car we are selling. around the second or third text, he actually had the audacity to ask "whats yo race?". being a color blind person it sort of rubs be the wrong way when people automatically associate race with things that have nothing to do with race. i actually answered the guy's question, saying my family was Egyptian, at which point he did not reply, its just pretty childish to look at people in that manner, but thats how shallow people are these days
No, I would say look at the tallest, piano playing, black guy that closed the show last night. His ass is on fire!!! Black or white, AB, I would still piss on you.
How do I, "identify people?" By the vibe they send out. By how they treat the people around them. How they comport themselves. Are they polite? Funny? Have a wit? Make intelligent conversation? Are they interesting and well read? Do they know a lot about the world, history, current events? If they are a guy, do they treat women well, or as sex objects? If they are a woman, do they treat men well, or as sex objects? It ain't complicated. Usually, I figure a person out in a short time. The longer it takes me to get a, "read," on people, the more interesting they usually turn out to be.
